Warranty, consumer guarantees and getting a fault fixed

Warranty, consumer guarantees and getting a fault fixed

What MG's warranty covers, what Australian law gives you on top of it, and what to do when a repair is refused.

Two different things protect you and they are easy to confuse. MG's warranty is a promise from the manufacturer. The consumer guarantees in the Australian Consumer Law are rights you have by statute, and a warranty cannot take them away.

Scope. Australian consumer law applies to cars bought in Australia.

Three words the state regulatory websites use in common

  1. Evidence. Keep every record. Every email, letter and message, and a note of every phone call and conversation: who said what, and when. A dispute is decided on what can be shown, not on what was said.
  2. Complaint. Follow the steps the law sets out. A complaint to the dealer first, in writing. Then to your state or territory regulator. Then a claim at the tribunal or court in the table below. Each one expects the step before it to have been tried.
  3. Rights. Hold the dealer and MG to account. Under the consumer guarantees the dealer is responsible and must not send you to the manufacturer; under its warranty, MG is. Put every request in writing, ask for every refusal in writing, and do not accept a no until you have checked it against both.

Useful Information About Warranties and Guarantees in Australia

  1. MG's warranty is a promise from the manufacturer, on MG's terms, for the period MG chooses.
  2. The consumer guarantees are rights you get by law when you buy from a business (a dealer), new or used, and they sit on top of the warranty.
  3. A warranty cannot remove or shorten those guarantees, and they can outlast it: they apply for as long as is reasonable for a car of that price and age.
  4. Whether a fault is a major failure or a minor one decides who chooses the remedy: for a major failure you choose a refund or a replacement, or keep the car and be compensated for the drop in value; for a minor one the dealer picks, and will usually repair.
  5. Many disputes are argued on the warranty when the guarantee is the stronger ground, so check both before you accept a no.
  6. Go back to the dealer first, then your state or territory regulator, then the body in the table below.
  7. Reporting the problem to the ACCC is worth doing, but it will not get your car fixed: the ACCC does not resolve individual complaints.

Where a car dispute goes in your state

Where a car dispute goes depends on where you bought it. Three of the eight send you to a court, not a tribunal, so do not assume your state has a tribunal for this. Most of these bodies can only hear a claim against a business, so a car bought from a private seller is usually outside them.

Rear discs corrode early because regen does all the work — brake hard on purpose sometimes

Brake firmly from speed once a week where it is safe to do so, and run a lower regen setting for stretches, so the rear discs get used instead of corroding while regen does all the stopping.

Rear brake discs can corrode badly within a few thousand kilometres because regen means they are barely used

One owner found both rear discs significantly corroded at about 3,700 miles, with the parking brake binding and a scoring noise under braking; the dealer replaced them under warranty. The cause is not a defective part but how the car is driven. Strong regenerative braking means the rear friction brakes do very little work, so the discs never get wiped clean and surface rust builds and pits. Deliberately using the friction brakes now and then, including some firmer stops from speed, is what keeps them clear.

Brake pads have to be replaced a complete axle at a time, so one bad corner means paying for both sides

MG's instructions require brake pads and shoes to be renewed as complete axle sets, never corner by corner. That is a direct cost fact for MG4 owners because of how this car wears its brakes: the rears do almost nothing in normal driving thanks to regeneration, so when they do need attention it is usually corrosion or a sticking caliper on one side rather than even wear across the axle. Being quoted for two sides when only one corner is the problem is therefore MG's own instruction rather than a workshop padding the bill. The practical consequence is that any rear brake work on this car is effectively a pair job, and it is worth having both rear discs assessed at the same time, since heavily corroded discs and fresh pads are a poor combination.

MG's warranty gives tyres nothing at all, and wheel balancing and alignment only three months or 1,000 miles

The exceptions table lists tyres as zero months and zero miles - the manufacturer's warranty simply does not cover them - and puts wheel balance and wheel alignment on a three month or 1,000 mile term. That is the paperwork behind two familiar owner complaints: flat-spotted tyres after weeks at sea, and wheels that arrive from the factory noticeably out of balance. If your new MG4 vibrates on the motorway, the balance claim has a very short life and the tyre itself is not a warranty item at all, so raise it immediately and in writing, and expect any remedy to come as dealer goodwill or under consumer law rather than under the warranty. Other short-life wear items - wipers, bulbs, fuses, remote batteries, an air-con re-gas - are covered, but only for six or twelve months, and general wear and tear items other than tyres are covered only through the first 12 months or up to the first chargeable service.

Rear caliper slide pins can arrive dry from the factory, and regreasing all four corners cured a sticking parking brake

An owner who stripped all four brakes found the sliding pin rubbers completely dry and no copper grease on the pad contact surfaces. Repacking the pins with rubber grease and greasing the pad contacts stopped the rear parking brake sticking on and let the rear discs start wearing evenly again, so the earlier uneven, part-rusted band on the disc face gradually cleared. Light-use rear calipers on an EV are prone to seizing, and a factory that skipped lubrication makes it worse.

Every scheduled service includes a proper underbody inspection of the high-voltage battery pack, not just a look around the car

Both service types include a run of high-voltage checks done from underneath: the battery pack housing and its bracket examined for cracks, damage or deformation; the pack's vent valve checked for damage and for whether its installation mark shows it has shifted; the paint marks on the pack mounting bolts checked so a loosened bolt is visible; the pack earth strap checked and replaced if needed; the cooling water pipe clips checked for a reliable seal; plus the high and low voltage harnesses and connectors checked for chafing, interference or damage, and the manual service disconnect switch checked for condition and security. If you have grounded the car, hit road debris or driven through deep water, this is the inspection to ask for by name - and it means the car genuinely has to go on a ramp.

MG's own manual states that fitting components it has not recommended invalidates the warranty

The manual opens its service and replacement instructions by telling technicians that only components MG recommends may be used, and then says plainly that using anything else makes the warranty invalid. The same short paragraph warns that non-recommended parts can compromise both vehicle safety and the car's anti-corrosion protection, and adds that MG dealers are only supposed to supply MG-recommended components in the first place. This sits awkwardly beside the reassurance owners are usually given that an MG can be serviced anywhere: where the work is done and what goes into the car are two separate questions, and this sentence is what a dealer will point at if a claim is later declined. It is worth knowing before you accept a cheap non-genuine part on anything structural, braking, suspension or corrosion-related, and worth keeping the receipt and specification for anything aftermarket that does go on.

Calibrating the MG4's camera and radars is a road test at 40 to 60 km/h, not something done in the workshop bay

The front camera behind the windscreen and the radars all relearn their aim by being driven, not by being pointed at a target board. MG specifies a sustained run on a long straight road, held between 40 and 60 km/h, and the two systems want different roads: the camera needs clearly visible lane lines down both sides, while the radars need evenly spaced roadside objects such as power poles to lock onto. How long it takes depends on the road and how much there is to see. This explains a lot about why a windscreen replacement, a wheel alignment or a bumper repair can take longer than expected, why a workshop in a dense urban area may struggle to complete it at all, and why a car can come back from a repair with the driver assistance systems behaving oddly - the parts were fitted, but the drive was never done properly.

Opening the battery pack needs a dedicated clean indoor bay plus insulation and air-tightness testing, not just a workshop

The manual sets out what a facility must have before the pack can even be opened: a controlled indoor area of about one car in size, protected from rain and snow, kept dry and ventilated, screened off from metal dust, powder and oil, with warning signs and restricted access. The pack's upper cover is held on by 80 bolts and four suspension nuts. An insulation test at 500 volts must be done before and after any work, reading at least 550 megohms, and the pack then has to pass a sealed dry-chamber pressure test and a separate coolant-circuit pressure test before it goes back under the car. That is why pack-internal repair is a specialist job with a small number of approved sites rather than something your usual garage takes on, and it is also a reasonable list of results to ask for if your car's pack has ever been opened.

MG classes the charging port and even the AC charging cable as high-voltage components only trained personnel may work on

The high voltage precautions name the components that untrained staff are forbidden to dismantle, and the list is broader than owners expect: the battery pack and drive motor, the power electronics, the high voltage harness, the electric air conditioning compressor, the onboard charger, the charging port and the AC charging cable. Work requires documented high-voltage training, insulating gloves and boots to a national standard, and a multimeter check that the circuit is genuinely dead before anything is touched. After the manual service disconnect is pulled, a five minute wait is required before checking for residual voltage, and the car must stand for at least three minutes with the 12V and redundant 12V batteries disconnected beforehand. The practical consequence is that a damaged charge port or charging cable is not a general workshop job on this car, and a repair done outside that framework is both a safety question and a warranty one.

Battery warranty claims are refused outright if anyone but an MG authorised New Energy repairer has opened the high-voltage pack

MG names this as a standing condition rather than a general exclusion: if the high-voltage battery has been opened or removed from the car by anyone other than an MG Authorised New Energy Repairer, claims will not be accepted. That matters for the growing trade in independent EV battery work and module-level repair, and for anyone tempted to let a general workshop investigate a pack fault. Independents can legally access MG's repair information, but the battery is the one area where letting the wrong workshop inside costs you the cover. MG's European warranty is 84 months or 150,000 km, and the battery and motor get the same term, not a longer one

MG's European service book sets the new-car warranty at 84 months or 150,000 km from the date of first registration, whichever comes first, and it transfers to each new owner for whatever is left of it. The same 84 month / 150,000 km term - not a separate longer one - covers the high-voltage battery pack, the drive motor, the intelligent motor control unit and, on dual-motor cars, the secondary axle motor controller. That is a different deal from the Australian one, where the equivalent cover is unlimited kilometres, so a European owner's warranty can run out on distance in a way an Australian owner's cannot. The service record pages carry a blunt line that the record is important and could affect your warranty entitlement, so make sure the correct page is stamped and signed at the end of every visit. Just as useful is the phrasing MG uses throughout the book: it repeatedly refers to an MG Authorised Repairer or a suitably equipped service centre, which is the manufacturer's own document acknowledging that the car can be serviced somewhere other than a franchised dealer. When the last service record entry is used, MG expects you to order a replacement book and copy the vehicle details across so the history stays continuous.

The corrosion inspection your warranty depends on is a visual check with no trim removed, and it needs the car to be clean first

The corrosion inspection that has to be recorded to keep the anti-perforation warranty alive turns out to be a modest thing. MG's instruction is a two-stage look: raise the car and inspect the underbody sealer, sills, wheel arches and the areas around suspension mounting points with a lamp, then lower it and look over the visible paintwork, with particular attention to the leading edge of the bonnet, the flanges in the front compartment and the lower body and doors. The manual states this is a visual check only and that the technician is not required to remove trim panels or sound-deadening material. It also says the car must be washed first if it is dirty. Two things follow for an owner: turning up with a filthy car undermines the inspection you are paying for, and corrosion hidden behind trim, glass surrounds or seats will not be found at this stage - MG notes those cases need the parts removed and replaced to repair properly.

MG documents rebuilding the MG4's reduction gearbox, but the motor itself may not be opened

This section quietly answers a question owners of leaking cars have been asking. MG publishes a full internal rebuild of the reduction gearbox: differential oil seals replaced on their own, input, intermediate and differential bearings pressed out and back in, circlips and adjustment shims measured and selected to hundredths of a millimetre, sealant applied to the housing joint, and a pressure test of both the dry cavity and the coolant circuit before the unit goes back in. So on paper a gearbox that is weeping oil is a seal-and-gasket repair, not automatically a new drive unit - useful leverage if you are quoted a complete assembly. The motor is the opposite case. MG states plainly that the rotor is strongly magnetic and that nothing beyond the high- and low-voltage cover plates may be dismantled, so the motor is a sealed item that gets replaced rather than repaired. That split is worth knowing before you accept any quote: the geared half of the drive unit is serviceable, the electrical half is not.

MG's service sheet requires the technician to read and write down your battery's state of health at every service

Both MG4 maintenance check sheets carry the same pair of line items: connect the diagnostic system and read, log and clear all fault codes, then check and record the high-voltage battery's state of charge and state of health, with a printed percentage box on the sheet for each. The number owners chase with third-party Bluetooth dongles is therefore one that MG's own technician is instructed to capture on every visit. Ask for it, ask for it written on the invoice, and over the years you build a dated degradation record - much stronger evidence for a battery warranty claim than a range readout, and far more useful than guessing from full-charge kilometres.

At the bottom of both MG4 maintenance check sheets, under the heading 'at every service', is a requirement to carry out an annual corrosion and cosmetic inspection using a dedicated corrosion inspection sheet, and to update the service portfolio to confirm it was done. This is the check that underpins the anti-perforation and paint side of the warranty, and it is the easiest one to skip quietly because it generates no parts and no visible work. If you ever need to claim for corrosion or paint, an unbroken run of completed and stamped corrosion inspections is what makes the claim straightforward - so check the sheet exists in your service pack rather than assuming it does.

MG's UK seven-year warranty runs unlimited mileage for only the first year, then is capped at 80,000 miles

The UK warranty statement sets the clock running from the date of first registration and splits the cover in two: unlimited mileage for the first 12 months, then a hard 80,000 mile ceiling for months 13 to 84, whichever comes first. It transfers to each new owner while it still has time and mileage left, which is what makes a used MG4 worth checking the registration date on. Two smaller points sit in the same document: a part replaced under warranty is only covered for whatever is left of the original period, not a fresh term of its own, while a genuine MG part bought and fitted separately carries its own 12 months unlimited mileage.

Each service has to fall within 28 days or 1,000 miles of its due point, and years four to seven depend on a complete service history

Two conditions in the warranty statement decide whether the back half of the warranty survives. First, every main service must be carried out within 1,000 miles (1,609 km) or 28 days of the recommended interval or service anniversary, and the service record must be stamped and endorsed. Second, the fourth to seventh years of cover are conditional on a full and accurate service history in line with MG's schedule, using genuine parts and fluids to the correct specification. Independent servicing does not by itself invalidate the warranty, but MG says faults resulting from work done by a non-authorised repairer may not be covered - so the safest position for an independent-serviced car is genuine parts, correct fluid specs, and receipts kept. The statement also warns that continuing to drive with a known fault can invalidate cover, which is a good reason to get every complaint logged on a job card even when the dealer says it is normal.

If a dealer strips the car to find a fault that turns out not to be MG's responsibility, the owner pays the investigation

The warranty statement says exploratory dismantling charges are only reimbursed as part of a valid claim, and that it is the warranty holder's responsibility to authorise and pay those charges if the failure proves not to be MG's. That is the written basis for something owners find outrageous - being asked to approve or pre-pay a diagnostic fee on a car that is still in warranty. It is not a dealer inventing a charge; it is how the policy is written. The practical defence is to ask, before you sign the authority, what the charge will be, what would make it a valid claim, and to have the symptom and any relevant bulletin or service action recorded on the job card first, because a fault that maps to a known campaign is far less likely to end up billed to you.

Using an MG EV for private hire or taxi work cuts the warranty to three years or 60,000 miles

There is a separate warranty policy for cars used for private hire or taxi work: three years or 60,000 miles for electric and hybrid vehicles, and that reduction explicitly includes the high-voltage powertrain components and the lithium-ion battery. To be eligible at all the car has to be registered as a private hire or taxi vehicle with MG by an MG dealer, and MG says failure to do that may void the warranty entirely. Anyone buying an MG4 to do rideshare or private hire needs to declare it up front rather than after a problem appears, and anyone buying used should ask whether a high-mileage example has been registered that way, because it changes what cover is left.

MG's free UK breakdown cover runs 12 months at a time and only restarts when an MG dealer services the car

MG Assistance is the free breakdown cover supplied with a new MG in the UK. It is not run by MG: the service is provided by the AA (Automobile Association Developments Ltd), with one element underwritten by a separate insurer. It runs for 12 months from the date of first registration, and the only other way it starts is by being activated following a service at an MG Service Partner - so it is a rolling 12-month benefit that depends on you going back to the franchised network. Have the car serviced by an independent garage, or skip a year, and the cover simply lapses. It attaches to the car rather than to you: anyone driving it with permission is covered, along with everyone travelling in it up to the legal seating capacity, to a maximum of eight including the driver. Because it costs nothing there is no refund if you cancel, and MG treats it as part of the All Component Warranty package, though cancelling the assistance does not cancel the warranty. The Australian MG4 is sold with a seven year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, which is among the longest offered on any car in the market and unusual in not capping distance. For a high-kilometre driver that combination is worth real money against rivals whose warranties expire on distance well before they expire on time. It is one of the strongest parts of the ownership case for the car.

From August 2024 the warranty became 10 years or 250,000 km, and it survives independent servicing

MG Australia extended cover from seven years unlimited kilometres to ten years or 250,000 km across all MG4 variants in August 2024, with the traction battery explicitly included rather than covered under separate terms. The detail that matters most is that owners report it holding even if the car is serviced outside the MG dealer network, which is unusual and removes the usual lock-in. Note the trade: the new term adds three years but introduces a distance cap that the old one did not have, so a very high-kilometre driver may have been better off under the old terms.

Australian MG4s do not get over-the-air updates; software comes from the dealer, and you have to find out it exists

MG Australia confirmed that no MG model sold in Australia offered over-the-air updates, and that MG4 software is applied at a dealer. The awkward part is notification. Owners learn about updates either through MG marketing emails if they opted in, or when a dealer mentions it at a scheduled service. Some dealers contact customers proactively and some do not. Updates done alongside scheduled servicing during warranty are complimentary, but an update requested outside a scheduled service can be charged at the dealer's discretion.

MG treated shipping-damaged tyres as outside the warranty, and UK owners recovered the cost through dealer goodwill or consumer law

When a dealer proved an owner's tyres were flat-spotted, MG's importer declined to cover them, citing a tyre warranty of zero miles and zero time, on the basis the tyres are worn from the moment the car is driven off the ship. The dealer instead secured a goodwill contribution (around 400 pounds) toward a replacement set of CrossClimate 2 all-seasons, with the owner paying only the price difference and no fitting or balancing charge. Others pointed out that a genuinely defective tyre is separately covered by consumer-rights law and by the tyre manufacturer, regardless of what the vehicle warranty excludes.

One owner's MG4 sat at a dealer for over 60 days waiting on a replacement infotainment screen at just 400 miles old, with the dealer only able to say weekly that there was no news on the part. At least two other owners described the same fault and month-plus waits while still paying finance and insurance. The practical remedies owners converged on were a courtesy car for the whole period (one covered 2,000 miles in his) and keeping a written record, because consumer law can still support rejection if repairs drag on unreasonably.

Australia has had more than one MG distribution arrangement, which confuses warranty and servicing

Australian owners flag genuine confusion caused by MG products reaching the market through more than one importer and network arrangement over time. The practical consequence is that warranty handling, servicing entitlements and who you escalate to can differ depending on where and when the car was bought. If you get inconsistent answers from different dealers about the same question, this is often why. Ask who actually holds the warranty obligation for your car rather than assuming every MG dealer is equivalent.

An owner whose rear discs were badly corroded from long pre-sale storage had both the discs and pads replaced by the dealer at no charge, alongside a replacement passenger door handle and driver's footrest. Other members were surprised, since brake discs and pads are normally treated as wear-and-tear consumables that a dealer would at most clean up and re-grease rather than replace for free. A worn anti-roll bar bushing means a whole new anti-roll bar, front or rear, because MG bonds the bushes onto the bar

MG's first suspect for a knock from the front suspension is the anti-roll bar bushing - but the bushes are vulcanised onto the bar as a single piece and the clamps are pressed on with special tooling, and the manual states plainly that neither can be taken apart or replaced on its own. The rear bar is written up the same way. So the cheap-sounding fix of 'just doing the bushes' does not exist on this car: it is a new bar. The drop links are the same story, since their ball joints are not serviceable and a rattly link means a new link. The converse is worth knowing too, because it is where the money is saved: MG does allow the front lower arm's ball joint and its rear bush, the trailing arm bush and the bearing in the top of the front strut to be replaced individually, so not every suspension complaint is a whole-assembly bill.

For a knock from the rear, MG's first two suspects are the upper and lower swing arm bushings

The rear suspension abnormal-sound procedure has nine steps and opens with the rear upper swing arm bushing, then the rear lower swing arm bushing. Only after those does it look at the damper leaking oil, a loose rear hub, the anti-roll bar link and its rubber bushing, the lateral push rod bushing, the trailing arm bushing, and finally a loose rear subframe. MG4 owners have been reporting a clunk from the rear - often the left side - over speed bumps and when moving off, and this is the manufacturer stating what it expects that to be: worn rear arm bushings first, everything else after. A loose rear hub and a loose subframe both being on the list is also worth noting, because those are checks rather than parts.

A forum moderator states ball joints and bushes are covered for 36 months, so push for warranty — though one owner waited four months while MG insisted on a re-inspection three months later. Do not wait for a noise: the owner who failed his MOT had no suspension noises and normal handling, and a 45,000-mile car in the same thread was fine, so ask for the bushes to be inspected specifically at each service.

The XPOWER steering wheel damper is a documented part built into the horn mechanism, for cars produced before 15 October 2023

Bulletin SI-TB2024011601 describes the steering wheel damper repair in detail. The dealer first confirms the complaint and checks that the car was produced before the 15 October 2023 breakpoint - after that date the damper is factory-fitted. The airbag comes off, the old horn mechanism (three bolts) is removed and a new damped assembly, part number 11623528, goes in its place; it is a 0.4 hour warranty job claimed under fault code 36 (VIBRATES), and MG restricts it to all-wheel-drive cars. One line in the bulletin is worth knowing: MG warns that the springs and rubbers in the new part can shift out of position in the packaging, and shows which positions are right and wrong. A damper assembled with a displaced spring is a plausible reason why some owners report the fix made no difference.

The doors unlock themselves after a crash, but MG's own wording excludes a car that was locked from outside

MG confirms the airbag module sends an unlock request the moment it senses an impact, so in a normal collision the doors free themselves for rescuers. The manual then adds a qualifier that matters: this does not apply where the car has been locked externally. In other words, the automatic post-crash unlock is a protection for people driving the car, not a guarantee that a locked, parked, deadlocked MG4 will open itself if something hits it. This is worth pairing with the known deadlocking behaviour, where a single press of the fob can superlock the car with someone still inside.

MG's first two checks for keyless entry that will not work are how far away the key is and what is interfering with it

Every one of MG's keyless routines - unlocking, locking, poor coverage, and the car not starting - opens with the same two questions before a single measurement is taken. Is the smart key too far from the car, with MG's test being whether the fault disappears with the key within about 1.5 metres of the tailgate, and is there a strong source of interference near the key. Only then does the routine move on to the key battery's contact and voltage, the key itself, the module fuse, the door handle antennas and the separate interior antennas. That is the manufacturer saying that intermittent keyless behaviour is, in its experience, usually the environment rather than a broken car. Before paying for a diagnosis, try the key away from a pocket that also holds a phone, earbuds, a power bank or a second key, and note whether it fails in the same place each time, because a particular car park, workplace or spot near a transmitter is a strong hint. The fact that each door handle has its own antenna also explains a car that unlocks reliably at one door and not another.

MG treats a flashing anti-theft lamp as the sign of a flat key fob battery, and the cell has to go in positive side up

In the procedure for a remote key whose functions have all stopped, MG asks the technician to confirm two things about the fob battery: that it is properly fitted with the positive face upward, and that it still has sufficient capacity - with the stated test for capacity being that no anti-theft system warning lamp is flashing on the information display. That gives owners two useful things. If you see the anti-theft or immobiliser symbol flashing at you, treat it as a prompt to change the coin cell in the fob before assuming something worse. And if the key stopped working immediately after you changed the battery yourself, open it and check which way round the cell went in, because MG lists an incorrectly fitted battery as a real failure rather than an impossibility.

If the ABS kicks in under gentle braking, MG's first suspect is a badly fitted brake pad

MG treats the complaint of a wheel locking and the ABS activating when you have barely touched the pedal as a recognised fault with only three expected causes: a brake pad that has not been fitted correctly, a caliper that is sticking, and a damaged master cylinder. The pad-fitment answer is the interesting one for owners, because it points straight at recent work. If your MG4 starts chattering and shuddering through the pedal on light braking shortly after a pad change, a service or any wheel-off job, MG's own expectation is that the pad may simply be in wrong. That is a warranty or comeback conversation with whoever did the work, not a mystery to live with, and it is a safety issue because braking becomes unpredictable.

The seven-year rust-through warranty only survives if a dealer does and stamps an annual corrosion inspection

MG's anti-perforation cover runs seven years against corrosion rusting right through a body panel from the inside out, and it names the panels it applies to - bonnet, roof, boot lid, tailgate, front wings, rear quarters, doors, sills, pillars and underbody. But it is explicitly conditional: the car must be inspected annually by an authorised MG repairer throughout the period, with an MG Corrosion Warranty Annual Inspection Sheet filled in and the record stamped, and an incomplete inspection record is listed as an exclusion. The MG4 maintenance check sheet builds this in - an annual corrosion and cosmetic inspection is one of the after-every-service items. The owner action is simple and easy to miss: when you collect the car from a service, check that the corrosion inspection sheet has actually been completed, not just the service stamp.

Misting in the rear light covers is common on the MG4 — but owners disagree on whether it is harmless

Five to seven SE and Trophy owners report fog inside the rear light covers, and the common reply is that they all do it and it clears in the warmth, eventually — one poster's explanation is that the clear outer cover is not watertight and probably has breather holes in the bottom, with the sealed LED cluster behind it unaffected. Treat that as a theory rather than a finding: others in the same thread argue it means moisture is getting in and the seals are not doing their job. A body shop told one owner it happens on some cars, Teslas being the worst. MG's water-sealing design explicitly does not cover high-pressure car washes

In the preamble to the water leak tests the manual states that the car is designed to work under normal environmental conditions, that the sealing materials and components are specified to withstand the natural elements, and that those specifications cannot take account of artificial conditions - with high pressure car washes given as the example. The whole leak test procedure is then described as correlated to natural rainfall, not to a jet wash. This matters for anyone chasing water in the boot or a damp footwell: if the leak only ever appears after a high-pressure wash, MG's own documentation says the seals were never specified for that, which weakens a warranty argument. It also means a leak that shows up in ordinary rain is the one worth pressing, because that is the condition the car is supposed to survive.

The transmission leak repair includes topping the gearbox oil back up, and metal in the drained oil means the job must be escalated

The German-market version of the same breather bulletin adds detail the English one leaves out. When the gearbox oil is checked as part of the repair, roughly 0.7 litres (plus or minus 0.05) has to be put back in, and MG tells workshops the drained oil may be caught and reused. Critically, it also says that if the oil contains metal particles or is otherwise in poor condition, the dealer must stop and contact MG technical support rather than simply refitting it - that is the point at which the problem is no longer a leaking breather. MG Germany supplied the repair kits to dealers free of charge and told them not to claim the parts back on warranty. If your car has this repair done, it is worth asking what the drained oil looked like and whether it was replaced or reused.

Radio that freezes or cuts out on 2022-2024 cars is usually a faulty DAB module, and the fix is a replacement

If your radio randomly freezes, loses sound, changes station on its own or needs a reboot to come back, you are not imagining it and it is not something you are doing wrong. Cars from roughly 2022 to 2024 were built with a separate external DAB radio module that runs hot and has buffering faults, a part substituted in during the chip shortage. Later cars moved that hardware onto the main infotainment board, which is why newer cars behave differently. The real fix is having the module replaced under warranty, not another software reflash, so ask the dealer specifically about the DAB module rather than accepting 'no fault found'.

Parking sensors beeping at nothing: MG's first two causes are a dirty sensor face and a sensor refitted at the wrong angle

For the complaint that a warning is given when there is no obstacle, MG's list is short and starts with things you can see without a scan tool. Step one is that the sensor faces are dirty and need wiping clean. Step two is that a sensor is not sitting properly in the bumper, and MG's instruction is to check the fitting and adjust the mounting angle before condemning anything. Replacing the sensor comes last. Two things follow for an owner. Road film, mud, ice, snow, insects or a heavy coat of wax over a sensor is a real and free cause of phantom beeping, so clean them and retest before booking the car in. And if the phantom beeping started after a bumper repair, a respray, a towbar or a parking camera installation, MG's own second cause is a sensor that has gone back in slightly askew, which makes it the installer's problem rather than a warranty fault.

Cruise control buttons give no feedback until the system is active, so they can look broken on a used car

A used-car buyer was convinced his base Australian car had been built without cruise control, because the top two buttons on the steering wheel did nothing at all when pressed. Other Australian owners put him right: adaptive cruise is standard on every MG4 sold here, including the entry car, and the wheel buttons simply produce no visible response until the system has been switched on. The settings for cruise and the speed limiter live under the car icon on the screen, on the driver assistance page. If those pages are missing, or the buttons still do nothing with the system enabled, that is a fault worth pursuing under warranty rather than a missing option.

One owner's repeated flat 12V traced to a faulty gateway module drawing current, replaced under warranty

An Australian owner with multiple flat 12V batteries over two months found the cause was not the battery at all: a faulty gateway module was drawing current continuously. The module was replaced under warranty and the problem stopped. This is worth knowing because the instinctive response to a repeatedly flat 12V is to replace the battery, which in this case would have solved nothing and cost money. Under the UK warranty the 12V battery gets 12 months and any claim is capped at a £100 payout

The 12V battery has its own line in the exceptions table: 12 months for cars registered after January 2017, with a footnote limiting every 12V battery claim to a maximum £100 payout. Given how often an MG4's 12V battery is the thing that leaves you unable to open the boot or wake the car, that is worth knowing before you argue with a dealer - the cover is short and the money is capped, so a claim is only ever a contribution. It also means a flat 12V that traces to something else drawing current, rather than to the battery itself, is the better claim to pursue, because the module at fault is covered on the normal warranty terms rather than on this capped line.

Calling breakdown out twice for the same fault inside 28 days can get service refused, and repeat call-outs are reported to MG

This is the clause that matters most to anyone with a recurring problem - and on an MG4 that usually means a 12V battery that keeps going flat. The terms give the AA the right to refuse service where it is asked to deal with the same or similar fault it already attended within the preceding 28 days. More than that, if the AA believes the cover is being over-used for a fault it has attended before, it will report the matter to MG, and MG then decides whether any further assistance is provided until a permanent repair has been carried out. The booklet also puts the obligation on you: where a patrol carries out a temporary fix, it is your responsibility to get the car to an MG Service Partner and have it made good properly. The practical lesson is that a jump start is not a solution. If the car has stranded you once, get the underlying cause diagnosed and recorded in writing straight away, because the second and third call-outs are not guaranteed.

Every MG4 service is meant to record the battery's state of health, so you can simply ask the dealer for the number

The official MG4 maintenance check sheet has a dedicated line with boxes for SOC % and SOH % - the technician is required to check and record the high-voltage battery's state of charge and state of health at the service. That is a far better answer to 'how is my battery doing?' than watching the range readout, which is not a capacity meter, and it means owners do not have to buy a diagnostic dongle to get a figure. Ask for the SOH percentage to be written on your invoice at every service; two or three years of those numbers is a genuine degradation record and it is the evidence you would need if the pack ever approached the 70 percent warranty threshold.

Your battery's mileage and history only transfer to a new management module if the old one can still communicate

When the MG4's battery management module is replaced, MG's procedure reads the battery data, accumulated mileage and dates out of the old module and writes them into the new one, so the pack's history follows the car. But the manual sets out two separate replacement routes, and only one of them includes that backup step. If the old module has already failed to the point where it cannot communicate, there is no backup and no write-back - the new module simply gets installed and configured. That matters if you are buying used or making a warranty claim, because MG's own threshold for a traction battery claim is a measured capacity drop, and a module that died hard can take the recorded history with it.

MG's own threshold for a traction battery claim is a measured capacity drop below 70 percent of the original

The warranty statement puts a number on the battery guarantee that owners usually only hear second-hand. If a capacity check at an authorised MG repairer shows the high-voltage battery has fallen below 70 percent of the capacity it had when the car was delivered, the shortfall below that line counts as excessive loss and MG will act on it. The wording is deliberately staged: where possible MG repairs the affected portion of the pack rather than swapping the whole thing, and if it cannot be repaired the replacement may be a remanufactured battery rather than a new one. The practical consequence is that the trigger is a dealer capacity test, not the range figure on your dash, so a battery claim starts with asking for that test in writing.

LFP owners reassure each other that partial charges and charging in fits and starts are fine, and that you don't need to keep the battery in a narrow band to protect it, since a cooler pack while charging is if anything better. One owner put numbers on it: around 4,000 cycles in a gentle 45-75 percent window on a roughly 49 kWh pack works out to something like 370,000 km of driving before meaningful capacity loss, well beyond most cars' lives. The seven year unlimited kilometre warranty covers the traction battery too, not just the car

The Australian MG4's seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty is stated as covering both vehicle and battery. That matters more than the headline number, because on an electric car the battery is the component whose replacement cost would otherwise dominate the risk of ownership, and many manufacturers warrant the battery on separate and shorter terms than the car. The benchmark Australian owners work to is one to five percent capacity loss over the first year, with anything approaching ten percent in that period being a genuine cause for concern rather than normal settling. Early loss is also front-loaded: packs typically shed a little quickly and then flatten out, so a first-year figure does not extrapolate linearly. The warranty exceptions table gives the screen, the connected features and the driver assistance systems their own shorter term: 36 months or 45,000 miles, whichever comes first.
