Technical service bulletins and software campaigns

Every bulletin, campaign and named dealer fix we have found, with its number where one is known

Gathered from owners who were shown a bulletin, dealers who quoted a number, and regulator notices. Where a number is known it is in the entry. Ask for a fix by its number: a dealer can look up a bulletin they have never heard of, and cannot look up a description.

Scope. Bulletins and campaigns are issued per market. A UK or EU campaign number is not an Australian one; the market tag on each entry says which.

No MG4 recall exists on the Australian register — MG3, ZS, HS and MG6 are on it, the MG4 is not

Australia's national vehicle recall register lists five SAIC Motor Australia recalls — MG3 (Nov 2025), MG HS PHEV and HS +EV (May 2023), MG3 (Jun 2021), ZS (Nov 2018) and MG6 (Aug 2018) — and no MG4 of any variant. Searching the register for the supplier rather than the model returns the same five, so this is not a model-name spelling problem. Don't read it as "nothing was ever fixed": a recall is a safety defect notified to the regulator, and the MG4 work owners talk about — the XPOWER vibration measures, the undertray bracket, the module updates — is service-campaign and technical-bulletin territory, which never appears on this register.

The Australian recall register lists no MG4 recall at all as at September 2026

The Australian Government vehicle recall register was searched directly on 5 September 2026 by two independent methods: a free-text search for MG4, and the register's own manufacturer filter for the make MG. The make filter returns seven MG recalls covering the MG3 (2021, and 2024-2025), the MG HS PHEV and HS +EV (2021-2022), the ZS (2016-2018), the MG6, the MG TF and the MGF. The importer filter for SAIC Motor Australia returns five recalls, being the MG3 twice, the HS plug-in hybrid, the ZS and the SAIC MG6. The MG4 does not appear in any of them. A control search for MG3 returned the two known MG3 recalls, which confirms the search itself was working rather than silently failing.

A 2023-registered MG4 shows zero recalls on the DVSA checker — the superlock recall is filed under 2022

The GOV.UK check-vehicle-recalls service returns 'This vehicle has no recalls' for MG MOTOR MG4 model year 2023. The superlock recall sits under model year 2022 instead: R/2022/355, launched 07-01-2023, 1,960 vehicles, for MG4s superlocking while still in running mode — doors unopenable from inside or out, key disabled, windows dead — remedied by a software update. There is a lane keep assist service campaign, so ask the dealer if your car is covered if it is twitchy

Owners have been called in by their dealer for a service campaign that updates the lane keep assist, and in at least one case the same campaign was applied a second time with further refinement. Owners who had it done report fewer false lane-keep interventions and better lane centring afterwards. If your lane keep assist feels twitchy or intervenes when it should not, it is worth asking the dealer whether there is an outstanding lane keep or driver-assist campaign for your car rather than assuming the behaviour is final. MG uses RCxxx for recalls and SCxxx for service campaigns — dealers call them all 'recalls'

A forum regular sets out MG's convention: "If it's a recall then it'll have an RCxxx number. If it's an SCxxx number then it's a service campaign item, but dealers are lazy and just call them all recalls." RC008 is the MG4's 'getting locked in' superlock fix, and a genuine recall brings a DVSA letter — one owner had his done a year earlier off the back of one. Because dealers use the words interchangeably, ask for outstanding work by bulletin number rather than asking whether there are 'any recalls'. SCUK001 is a four-module software bundle — EVCC, FDR, BCM and FICM — done in one dealer visit

An owner's October 2023 dealer booking confirmation reads "carry out MG campaign SCUK001 Software updates to be completed (EVCC, FDR, BCM, FICM)" — the EV charge controller, front detection radar, body control module and forward camera module, all in one visit. The same owner hoped it would cure lane-keep and AEB behaviour, AC charger compatibility, head-unit black screens, Android Auto and Bluetooth dropouts, but that is what he was hoping for, not a documented scope, and the confirmation lists no symptoms. A moderator corrected owners calling it a recall: "That's a Service Campaign item (the bulletin will be SCxxxx) not a recall (which would be RCxxx, like the locking in one was RC008)." A VIN-listed charging software campaign, SC47, was issued in March 2023 to improve MG4 charging performance

Service campaign SC47 (bulletin SI-SC2023031001, dated 10 March 2023) had dealers reprogram the charging control unit to a newer version in order to improve charging performance. Eligibility was by VIN list rather than by symptom, cars sitting in stock had to be updated before they were handed over, and the job was quoted at 0.4 hours with the diagnostic report attached to the claim as a condition of payment. Because it is a VIN-based campaign rather than a recall, nobody necessarily contacts you about it, and a car that changed hands or was imported can slip through. If you have an early MG4 and charging has never been quite right, it is reasonable to ask the dealer to check your VIN against SC47 specifically.

Australian MG4s run their own infotainment software line, so European version numbers are no guide to whether yours is current

Australian-delivered cars left the factory on a software family that is entirely separate from the UK and European one, with its own numbering that starts much lower. Australian owners comparing notes on the forum keep concluding their car is dozens of releases behind a British car, when in fact the two numbering schemes cannot be compared at all. There is a claim that a service bulletin allows Australian cars to be moved onto the international software, and at least one Australian owner has run a European build, but the long-standing members warn against swapping families: the software is matched to the hardware modules fitted to that car, and the wrong family can cost you functions or leave the head unit unusable. The practical result is that a version number quoted by a UK owner tells you nothing about your own car.

Independent workshops, not just MG dealers, can access MG's repair information and diagnostic tools by law

In Australia the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme, a right-to-repair law, requires MG to sell its technical service and repair information and its diagnostic tool access to any qualified repairer, not only its own dealers. MG publishes the process openly: independents apply through MG's technical information portal and request access by email. Access is tiered, from general technical information, to an EV high-voltage safety tier, to a security tier for keys and immobiliser work, and is sold as a paid subscription. In practice this means you are not locked into a dealer for servicing or diagnosis; a properly equipped independent can do the same work.

MG's own MG4 service sheet requires the dealer to look for outstanding service actions before starting work

The very first line of the official MG4 EV maintenance check sheet, before any physical job, is to check for outstanding service actions on the car. The sheet then requires the technician to connect the diagnostic equipment and read, log and clear all stored fault codes as part of the service. Together those two lines are the most useful thing an owner can quote at a service booking: MG's own procedure obliges the dealer to check whether your VIN has any campaign, bulletin or software action waiting, and to pull the codes out of the car. Ask for both in writing - what service actions were found and whether they were carried out, and what codes were logged before they were cleared. Codes are wiped as part of the job, so if you do not ask for the log you lose the record of any intermittent fault the car has quietly been storing.

MG requires seven powertrain and charging modules to be updated as a matched set, so a single-module update is not the whole job

Bulletin SI-TB2023071101 sets an update rule that explains a lot of half-finished dealer visits. Seven modules - the gateway, the battery management system, the charging control unit, the charge port controller, the suspension/chassis control unit and the two motor power control units - are version-locked together. If a workshop updates or replaces any one of them for any reason, it must read the software level of the other six and bring anything older up to at least the listed level. MG also gives an order of operations, and a later revision of the bulletin adds a specific trap: after updating the charging control unit, the charge port controller can stop responding, and the way to wake it is to plug a charger into the socket, after which its version can be read and updated. Battery management software is specific to your battery size, with different versions for the 51, 64 and 77 kWh cars. If a module has been changed on your car, ask for written confirmation that all seven were checked.

MG's own diagnostic process tells the technician that what you are reporting may simply be normal for the car

Before anything is measured, MG's diagnostic strategy has the technician establish what normal operation of the system looks like, then compare your car against other examples of the same model in normal working order. The manual states plainly that the condition you describe may be a normal condition, and instructs the technician to explain the check results and how the system works back to you. Later, in the vibration section, MG goes further: if the symptom has been reproduced and the car matches known-good cars of the same model, year and configuration, the technician is to treat it as a potential operating characteristic of the vehicle and check the service bulletins to see whether MG has since decided otherwise. This is the documented route by which a real, repeatable complaint ends up written up as no fault found. It also tells you what actually shifts that outcome: not arguing, but a service bulletin, or a comparison against another MG4 that genuinely behaves differently.

If a dealer strips the car to find a fault that turns out not to be MG's responsibility, the owner pays the investigation

The warranty statement says exploratory dismantling charges are only reimbursed as part of a valid claim, and that it is the warranty holder's responsibility to authorise and pay those charges if the failure proves not to be MG's. That is the written basis for something owners find outrageous - being asked to approve or pre-pay a diagnostic fee on a car that is still in warranty. It is not a dealer inventing a charge; it is how the policy is written. The practical defence is to ask, before you sign the authority, what the charge will be, what would make it a valid claim, and to have the symptom and any relevant bulletin or service action recorded on the job card first, because a fault that maps to a known campaign is far less likely to end up billed to you.

The reduction gearbox holds only 0.75 litres of oil, throws it around by splash, and breathes through a vent plug

MG specifies Shell E-Fluids E6 iX for the single-speed two-stage reducer, with a dry fill of just 0.75 litres, and says the internals are lubricated by splash - the gears fling the oil about, there is no pump. The casing carries an oil filler plug, a drain plug, both sealed with aluminium washers, and a vent plug assembly with a sealing tube at the top. That tiny oil volume is why the oil leaks owners reported were worth taking seriously: there is very little to lose before the gears are running dry. It is also the context for the breather modification that cured them - if the gearbox cannot vent as it warms up, internal pressure pushes oil past the shaft seals. If you find oil under the rear of the car, this is the assembly to name at the dealer.

MG itself blames long storage and flat-spotted tyres for part of the high-speed vibration, and requires a road-force test

Owners worked out for themselves that MG4s vibrating on the highway were often sitting on tyres flat-spotted by weeks of standing still in transit or in stock. MG's own bulletin says the same thing: poor stock maintenance during storage, such as long-term parking without the car being moved, causes tyre flat spots which intensify steering wheel and body vibration. It also makes a road-force test part of the official inspection sequence - not an ordinary balance, but a test of the tyre's road force, with any tyre that fails to be replaced before anything else is done to the car. That matters when a dealer says the wheels balanced fine, because an ordinary balance will not find this.

The documented fix is to load the newest telematics software, which the dealer downloads and installs from a USB stick, then restart the car and confirm the warning has gone; it is a 0.6 hour job claimed as a technical service bulletin. Just as usefully, MG tells dealers what to do when that does not work: the problem can be caused by hardware or wiring, and the dealer is then obliged to raise a technical support ticket with MG rather than send you away. Better tyres reduced the XPOWER vibration for most, but did not cure it — the thread starter blamed the driveshafts

On the XPOWER tyre-upgrade thread, owners who moved off the original fitment to Michelin Pilot Sport 5 or CrossClimate 2 mostly report the vibration reduced rather than gone. The thread starter, asked directly whether his had been cured by the Pilot Sports, answered "Are the vibes gone? In a word....... No. Much reduced? Yes", and concluded the real cause was the driveshafts not being perfectly balanced — a year later he was calling it a manufacturing and quality-control problem in the driveshafts and suspension mountings. Rebalancing likewise "did reduce vibes, but did not dispel them completely". One owner does claim his CrossClimate 2s "solved the problem not only with regards vibration but also the grip", so a cure is contested rather than unheard of. The very first numbered item in MG's UK Pre-Delivery Inspection manual for the MG4 tells the technician to check the register of service actions, recalls and technical bulletins and to carry out anything outstanding before touching the rest of the car. The later revision of the manual widened the wording from just 'service action bulletins' to explicitly include recalls and technical bulletins, and the same line heads both PDI tick sheets and both maintenance check sheets. That matters because owners are routinely told a fix is not available for their car: if a campaign existed when your car was prepared, applying it was not optional, and the signed PDI sheet filed with your customer record is the dealer's certificate that it was done. Ask to see that sheet, and ask again at every service, because the maintenance sheets repeat the same requirement.

The sagging rear undertray is documented as a guard-to-battery gap, and MG says it is only fixed if you complain

Technical Information TI-20231228, issued by SAIC Motor CEE, describes what owners call the drooping undertray: after a long period of driving, the gap between the rear subframe lower guard and the high-voltage battery can open up. The remedy is an aftersales aluminium alloy bracket (part 11769392) mounted externally on the guard to control the gap, held by two longer bolts (90006778) replacing the originals, all torqued to 4-6 Nm, with the middle mounting point keeping its original bolt. It is quoted at 0.2 hours and claimed under fault code 62 (IMPROPER CLEARANCE). The line that matters most to an owner is in capitals in the document: no proactive action is needed and no marketing activity was run, and the work is to be done only where a customer raises the concern. So a dealer saying there is 'nothing outstanding on your car' is not the same as saying nothing exists - you have to report it.

An airbag warning light for a low-resistance left curtain airbag is usually a connector lever, not a new airbag

If the airbag warning lamp comes on and the stored fault is B0021-1A - left curtain airbag resistance too low - MG's documented first action is not to replace the airbag. Bulletin SI-TB2023072101 tells the dealer to remove the connector at the airbag control module (shown as BY068 on the wiring diagram), separate the green locking lever from the cover hinges and fit a new lever, then refit and re-diagnose. The new lever is identified by a spot of white paint because it is otherwise indistinguishable from the old one. The whole job is 0.6 hours plus a small connector part, and only if the fault survives the repair is it escalated to MG for further support. If you are quoted for a curtain airbag replacement on this fault code, this is the document to raise first.

An early campaign (SC42) retuned the MG4's driver monitoring, and a renamed menu item tells you whether your car has had it

MG ran a service campaign in December 2022 - SC42, bulletin SI-SC2022122201 - because the driver monitoring system was not adapting well to how customers actually drive. The fix is not a mechanical one: the configuration in three modules (the instrument pack, the infotainment head unit and the front camera module) is reloaded to a newer level, and MG told dealers to reload all three even if the files already looked current. The genuinely useful part for an owner is the verification step MG gives its own technicians: after the campaign the function is renamed in the car's menus from 'Driver Drowsiness Detection' to 'Driver attention warning system'. If your car still shows the old wording, the campaign has not been applied. Cars sitting in stock were supposed to be done before delivery, and eligibility was by VIN list, so a car that changed hands early could have been missed.

Useful for working out whether the phantom braking software update is relevant to your car. Australian owners understand the emergency braking update to apply to vehicles built up to and including February 2024, with cars built after that expected to leave the factory with it already installed. If your car is older than that and has not been back to a dealer, it is a strong candidate for the update. If it is newer, the update is probably not what is causing your problem.

The undertray fix is a metal bracket and takes about ten minutes at the dealer

The Australian undertray bulletin turns out to be a small job. Owners report the remedy is a metal bracket fitted under warranty to stop the undertray sagging, and that the dealer work takes around ten minutes. Several owners had it done proactively on 2023 cars without having complained, while others had to ask for it and were then accommodated. Given how cheap it is to do and that a sagging undertray is one of the suspected causes of highway vibration, it is worth asking about at your next service whether or not you have a symptom.

MG's own order for an MG4 that shakes at speed is tyre condition, then wheel balance, then springs and dampers

The highway shake that MG4 owners have argued about for years has a manufacturer cause list, and it is short. For a car that jitters while driving, MG says check the tyre tread is smooth and free of anything embedded in it, then check the wheels are dynamically balanced within tolerance, then look at whether a front spring has lost its rate, then check the front damper for leakage or damage. Nothing else is on the list. That is first-party support for what owners worked out themselves: the vibration is overwhelmingly a tyre and balance problem, not a mysterious chassis defect, and a proper balance or a fresh set of tyres is the sensible first spend. The related complaint of uneven tyre wear starts with tyre pressure and balance too, with wheel alignment checked only at the very end.

MG's own bulletin recognises the XPOWER vibration at about 110 km/h and lays out a four-step remedy in order

Technical Information TI-20240321-EH32, issued by SAIC Motor International for all overseas markets, states plainly that the XPOWER can produce a vibration felt through the steering wheel and the seat at around 110 km/h, and that not every car does it. MG's engineering explanation is that at speed the driveshafts act as an excitation source and the vibration is carried into the seat and wheel through the body structure. The prescribed order of investigation is: set the tyre pressures to the recommended values and retest; road-force test the tyres and replace any that fail; fit the steering wheel damper and retest; and only for customers still complaining severely after that, consider the revised suspension parts. This is the document to name if a dealer has told you the shake is normal, cannot be reproduced, or that nothing exists for it.

There is a revised XPOWER suspension for severe vibration, in production from 21 February 2024, but MG tells dealers not to fit it routinely

The same MG bulletin goes further than the steering wheel damper. It says the engineering team evaluated a new suspension solution that meets the expectations of customers most sensitive to vibration, and lists the parts involved: revised left and right rear mounts, a revised front upper mount crossmember and a revised rear suspension frame. MG is careful about it - the work is described as technically demanding, recommended only for individual customers with severe complaints, and explicitly not suitable for a blanket service campaign. Two production breakpoints are given: the steering wheel damper went into build on 15 October 2023 and the revised suspension on 21 February 2024, so an XPOWER built after that date should already have both. For an owner who has had the damper fitted and still feels the shake, this is the documented next step rather than the end of the road.

The airbag comes off, the old horn mechanism (three bolts) is removed and a new damped assembly, part number 11623528, goes in its place; it is a 0.4 hour warranty job claimed under fault code 36 (VIBRATES), and MG restricts it to all-wheel-drive cars. One line in the bulletin is worth knowing: MG warns that the springs and rubbers in the new part can shift out of position in the packaging, and shows which positions are right and wrong. The official boot water leak fix is sealant brushed into a body cavity behind the rear bumper, bulletin SI-TB2024042401

MG's April 2024 bulletin states that water can get into the boot because of improper sealing, and sets out the repair. The rear bumper comes off - sixteen screws into the wheelhouse liners and brackets, a black cover, four more screws and the electrical plugs - and the technician then brushes self-adhesive sealer down into the hollow cavity from top to bottom, checks that every hole and gap in that area is covered and that no residue is left around it, and refits the bumper. It is booked at 0.4 hours under fault code 42 (LEAKS). Note what MG identifies as the cause: a sealing gap in the body structure behind the bumper. MG's own layout confirms the pressure-relief vents behind the rear bumper that owners identified as the boot water path

The cabin is fitted with pressure relief valves that let air out when you close a door or the blower pushes fresh air in, so the pressure equalises and your ears do not pop. MG states there is one at each side of the boot, and that they discharge into the covered space between the body and the rear bumper. Each is a grille covered by a soft rubber flap acting as a one-way check valve, whose opening automatically adjusts to the pressure difference between the cabin and outside. That is exactly the location and mechanism owners diagnosed as the usual entry point for water in the boot — and this is manufacturer confirmation that they are one-way rubber flaps in the body, not sealed panels. If a flap is distorted, contaminated or poorly seated, there is a direct path into the car. It also explains why the doors need a firmer push to close than owners expect.

Water round a door, window or tailgate does not mean a bad seal - MG's first answer is to adjust the panel

The water leak section carries an explicit warning against the obvious conclusion: if a leak is found around the door, window, trunk lid or liftgate, that does not necessarily indicate a poor weatherstrip, and an adjustment to the area may resolve the condition on its own. For MG4 owners with boot water this is important, because the usual dealer response is a new seal or a sealant kit, and owners repeatedly report those not holding. MG's own hierarchy puts panel and closure alignment ahead of replacing rubber. The same idea runs through the wind noise section, where misaligned body surfaces sit alongside leaking seals as a primary cause. If a replacement seal has already failed to cure your leak, asking about tailgate or door alignment is asking for the step MG documents rather than a repeat of the one that did not work.

MG publishes the MG4's paint codes and matched refinish formulas, so give a body shop the code rather than the colour name

MG's paint bulletin SI-TB2023102601 lists the MG4's factory colours against a three-letter paint code and a matched refinish code: Dover White (WSB), Pebble Black (PBC), Diamond Red (RSJ), Medal Silver (SSA), Brighton Blue (JAY), Fizzy Orange (NFZ), Andes Grey (PAG) and Hunter Green (GWH). It also tells refinishers where to get the mixing formula - registering on the paint supplier's online service and searching the code. The practical point for an owner is that the three-letter code, which is on the car's identification label, is what a paint supplier or body shop actually needs; marketing colour names are inconsistent between markets and years, and ordering touch-up paint by name is how you end up with a slightly wrong shade on a black car that shows everything.
