Dealers, servicing and software updates

What owners have been told at service, which updates changed what, and where the advice has been wrong

Service experience on this car varies more than the car does. The entries below include cases where an owner was told a fault was normal and it was not, and cases where a software update fixed something a mechanical repair had been quoted for. Note the date on each: the software has moved a long way, so a 2023 report about an update may no longer describe your car.

Updating the touchscreen will not change how the car steers, brakes or heats, because those live in separate modules

Owners repeatedly book the car in asking for 'the latest software' hoping to cure lane assistance that wanders, a nervous adaptive cruise or a climate control that reads several degrees out, then are disappointed. The head-unit software governs the screen, media, phone projection and menus and nothing else. The steering assistance, cruise, climate and battery management each have their own controller with its own software, and those can only be reflashed with the dealer's diagnostic tool through the car's diagnostic socket - an owner USB update cannot touch them. When you book the car in, describe the behaviour you want changed rather than asking for an infotainment update, or you will get the wrong job done.

Only three fluids are on a replacement clock: brake fluid every two years, coolant every four years or 96,000 km, transmission fluid every 96,000 km

Separately from the A and B inspections, MG lists three special maintenance items with their own intervals: the electric drive transmission fluid is replaced every 96,000 km, brake fluid every two years, and coolant every four years or 96,000 km (60,000 miles), whichever comes first. Levels of the transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant and washer fluid are checked at every service. This is the reason one visit in the cycle costs a good deal more than the ones either side of it - the step up is fluid, not labour - and it gives you something concrete to check a quote against.

Every scheduled service includes a proper underbody inspection of the high-voltage battery pack, not just a look around the car

Both service types include a run of high-voltage checks done from underneath: the battery pack housing and its bracket examined for cracks, damage or deformation; the pack's vent valve checked for damage and for whether its installation mark shows it has shifted; the paint marks on the pack mounting bolts checked so a loosened bolt is visible; the pack earth strap checked and replaced if needed; the cooling water pipe clips checked for a reliable seal; plus the high and low voltage harnesses and connectors checked for chafing, interference or damage, and the manual service disconnect switch checked for condition and security. If you have grounded the car, hit road debris or driven through deep water, this is the inspection to ask for by name - and it means the car genuinely has to go on a ramp.

The MG4's consumables sit on two clocks: brake fluid, cabin filter and key battery every two years, coolants and gearbox oil every four

MG's maintenance sheet puts the actual replacement items on fixed multi-year cycles rather than on every service. At two years or 48,000 km: brake fluid, the air intake pollen (cabin) filter, and the key remote handset battery - the last also whenever the instrument pack tells you. At four years or 96,000 km: the high-voltage battery system coolant and the motor/PEB coolant, plus the drive transmission fluid, with coolant strength measured and recorded after the change. That pattern explains why EV servicing looks cheap for a couple of visits and then jumps - the expensive service is the one where the coolants and the gearbox oil are done, not one where anything has worn out. Budget for the four-year visit and treat a quote that skips those items at that point as incomplete.

MG's own manual states that fitting components it has not recommended invalidates the warranty

The manual opens its service and replacement instructions by telling technicians that only components MG recommends may be used, and then says plainly that using anything else makes the warranty invalid. The same short paragraph warns that non-recommended parts can compromise both vehicle safety and the car's anti-corrosion protection, and adds that MG dealers are only supposed to supply MG-recommended components in the first place. This sits awkwardly beside the reassurance owners are usually given that an MG can be serviced anywhere: where the work is done and what goes into the car are two separate questions, and this sentence is what a dealer will point at if a claim is later declined. It is worth knowing before you accept a cheap non-genuine part on anything structural, braking, suspension or corrosion-related, and worth keeping the receipt and specification for anything aftermarket that does go on.

A replacement airbag control module has to be switched on with a separate activation step, and that same step re-enables the car's crash data recorder

Fitting a new airbag control module to an MG4 is not the end of the job. MG documents three distinct operations - loading the software, configuring it to your particular car, and then a separate 'activation' that turns on airbag deployment and the event data recorder. In other words, a freshly fitted module sits there inert until someone deliberately activates it, so a car that has had crash repairs done cheaply or hurriedly could in principle drive around with airbags that will not fire. It is also the clearest confirmation in MG's own documentation that the MG4 carries an EDR that logs what the car was doing in a collision, and that this recording function is tied to the airbag module rather than being a separate black box.

Calibrating the MG4's camera and radars is a road test at 40 to 60 km/h, not something done in the workshop bay

The front camera behind the windscreen and the radars all relearn their aim by being driven, not by being pointed at a target board. MG specifies a sustained run on a long straight road, held between 40 and 60 km/h, and the two systems want different roads: the camera needs clearly visible lane lines down both sides, while the radars need evenly spaced roadside objects such as power poles to lock onto. How long it takes depends on the road and how much there is to see. This explains a lot about why a windscreen replacement, a wheel alignment or a bumper repair can take longer than expected, why a workshop in a dense urban area may struggle to complete it at all, and why a car can come back from a repair with the driver assistance systems behaving oddly - the parts were fitted, but the drive was never done properly.

The air conditioning compressor is a high-voltage component, so a normal air-con shop cannot replace it

The MG4's compressor is driven electrically off the traction battery, not by a belt, and MG's procedure for removing it begins with pulling the manual service disconnect that isolates the high-voltage pack and includes unplugging a high-voltage harness connector from the compressor itself. That puts a failed compressor firmly in high-voltage-qualified territory: the independent air-conditioning specialist who would happily regas the car cannot legally or safely do the compressor unless they hold electric-vehicle qualifications and the right isolation equipment. Routine work that only involves the refrigerant circuit away from the compressor is a different matter, but anyone quoting to change the compressor should be able to tell you how they isolate the pack.

MG says a car with a passenger airbag must not be driven for 24 hours after a windscreen replacement

Buried in the airbag chapter is a warning most owners never see: once the windscreen has been replaced, the car should not be driven for a full 24 hours. The reason is that the passenger airbag inflates upward and braces against the inside of the glass, so the bonding adhesive has to be fully cured before the screen can do that job. A mobile fitter who replaces your screen in a supermarket car park and hands the keys straight back is not following the manufacturer's own instruction. Combine this with the separate requirement to recalibrate the forward-facing camera afterwards and a windscreen job on an MG4 is a two-step, next-day affair rather than a one-hour visit.

Opening the battery pack needs a dedicated clean indoor bay plus insulation and air-tightness testing, not just a workshop

The manual sets out what a facility must have before the pack can even be opened: a controlled indoor area of about one car in size, protected from rain and snow, kept dry and ventilated, screened off from metal dust, powder and oil, with warning signs and restricted access. The pack's upper cover is held on by 80 bolts and four suspension nuts. An insulation test at 500 volts must be done before and after any work, reading at least 550 megohms, and the pack then has to pass a sealed dry-chamber pressure test and a separate coolant-circuit pressure test before it goes back under the car. That is why pack-internal repair is a specialist job with a small number of approved sites rather than something your usual garage takes on, and it is also a reasonable list of results to ask for if your car's pack has ever been opened.

MG's manual says the airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners and clockspring should be replaced every 10 years

MG's own workshop manual treats the restraint system as time-expiring hardware rather than fit-and-forget. It states that the propellant inside airbag modules and seat belt pre-tensioners deteriorates with age, and that the airbag modules, the seat belt pre-tensioners and the rotary coupler (the clockspring behind the steering wheel) are to be replaced every ten years. Nothing in MG's published service schedule prices this in and no dealer is likely to raise it, but it is worth knowing if you plan to keep an early MG4 into the 2030s, and worth asking about on any car approaching that age.

MG's fluid specifications for the MG4: DOT-4 brake fluid, OAT coolant only, and one named gearbox oil

Useful facts to hand an independent workshop. The brakes take DOT-4 fluid and hold 0.8 litres. The coolant is an organic-acid (OAT) ethylene glycol type, and MG warns against topping up with a different formulation or adding aftermarket corrosion inhibitors, because the wrong chemistry can damage the drive system and the high-voltage battery pack. The reduction gearbox takes one specified oil and MG states bluntly that using anything else can seriously damage the transmission. In a genuine emergency a small amount of clean water may be added to the coolant tank, accepting weakened frost and corrosion protection until it is put right. The washer bottle holds only 2.5 litres, which is why it empties faster than owners expect.

MG rates how urgent each MG4 fault is, but the same rating means different things in different parts of the car

Every fault code in MG's list carries a severity from I to IV, where I means stop the vehicle immediately. The catch is that MG does not define the middle of that scale consistently. Level III - the most common rating by a wide margin, covering 901 of the 2,163 listed faults - means 'repair as soon as possible' when it comes from the brakes, the body control module, the steering or the airbag system, but only 'inspection during maintenance' when it comes from the battery pack, the charging unit, the air conditioning or the rear motor. Those are not the same instruction. Several modules also split level II into IIA, drive slowly to the nearest place that can look at it, and IIB, go when it is convenient. So a bare severity number from a scan tool is not meaningful on its own; it only means something alongside which module raised it.

Brake fluid is changed every two years whatever the mileage, and MG's own sheet marks it as a chargeable extra

Both MG4 check sheets put brake fluid replacement on a strict two-year clock, or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first, and both flag it as a chargeable extra rather than part of the standard service content. An EV uses its friction brakes so lightly that it is easy to assume the fluid does not matter, but brake fluid absorbs moisture with time rather than with use, so a garage-queen MG4 needs it exactly as often as a hard-worked one. Expect it on the bill at every second visit, and check whether a capped-price or prepaid plan actually includes it, because MG's own paperwork treats it as an extra.

MG specifies the delivery headlamp aim as 1.0 percent vertical and 0.0 percent horizontal, set with beam equipment

The PDI is not just a glance at the lights. The technician is required to position proper beam-setting equipment in front of the car, switch on the dipped headlamps and set the aim to 1.0 percent vertical and 0.0 percent horizontal, adjusting if it is out. Cars do come off a transporter with the aim wrong, and that is a common cause both of dazzling oncoming drivers and of an owner concluding the headlights are poor when they are simply pointed at the wrong place. If your MG4's beams look low, high or skewed, this is a documented target figure you can ask a dealer to reset to, rather than a matter of opinion. It is separate from the dashboard levelling dial, which only trims the aim for load.

MG classes the charging port and even the AC charging cable as high-voltage components only trained personnel may work on

The high voltage precautions name the components that untrained staff are forbidden to dismantle, and the list is broader than owners expect: the battery pack and drive motor, the power electronics, the high voltage harness, the electric air conditioning compressor, the onboard charger, the charging port and the AC charging cable. Work requires documented high-voltage training, insulating gloves and boots to a national standard, and a multimeter check that the circuit is genuinely dead before anything is touched. After the manual service disconnect is pulled, a five minute wait is required before checking for residual voltage, and the car must stand for at least three minutes with the 12V and redundant 12V batteries disconnected beforehand. The practical consequence is that a damaged charge port or charging cable is not a general workshop job on this car, and a repair done outside that framework is both a safety question and a warranty one.

Battery warranty claims are refused outright if anyone but an MG authorised New Energy repairer has opened the high-voltage pack

MG names this as a standing condition rather than a general exclusion: if the high-voltage battery has been opened or removed from the car by anyone other than an MG Authorised New Energy Repairer, claims will not be accepted. That matters for the growing trade in independent EV battery work and module-level repair, and for anyone tempted to let a general workshop investigate a pack fault. Independents can legally access MG's repair information, but the battery is the one area where letting the wrong workshop inside costs you the cover. An Australian owner reports traffic jam assist lane centering that used to hold the lane perfectly becoming erratic at highway speed on well-marked roads, deteriorating with successive updates. Windscreen jobs stall twice: glass supply, then MG insisting on doing the camera calibration

MG4 windscreen replacement has repeatedly turned into a multi-week job — early glass had to come from China, and MG dealers have insisted on doing the forward ADAS camera calibration themselves rather than letting the glass company do it, so owners waited weeks between the new screen going in and the camera being set up. Calibration is dynamic: roughly ten minutes driving at 30-50 mph on roads with clear white lane markings, and one owner had four attempts at a dealer that never reached 100%. The Jan 2023 MG4 software recall wiped car settings and broke iSMART, weather and rescue call

Owners who had the January 2023 software recall applied found it cleared all the car's settings and left the head unit's connected features dead: weather saying it could not get the data or to activate the head unit, in-car iSMART login failing with 'Device ID does not exist', the emergency rescue-call button doing nothing from the touchscreen, and MG Touchpoint placing the car in Germany instead of Wales. Windscreen delays are the calibration slot as much as the glass — one dealer quoted eight weeks

In a 2023 UK thread the glass itself took about three weeks through a glass company, but the ADAS camera calibration was the real bottleneck: one owner was given an eight-week dealer appointment because MG had not supplied the calibration laptop software to the glass firms, so only the dealer could do it. Insurance excesses quoted were £25 for a chip repair against £125 for a full replacement, so getting a chip repaired early is far cheaper as well as far faster. Australian MG4s run their own infotainment software line, so European version numbers are no guide to whether yours is current

Australian-delivered cars left the factory on a software family that is entirely separate from the UK and European one, with its own numbering that starts much lower. Australian owners comparing notes on the forum keep concluding their car is dozens of releases behind a British car, when in fact the two numbering schemes cannot be compared at all. There is a claim that a service bulletin allows Australian cars to be moved onto the international software, and at least one Australian owner has run a European build, but the long-standing members warn against swapping families: the software is matched to the hardware modules fitted to that car, and the wrong family can cost you functions or leave the head unit unusable. The practical result is that a version number quoted by a UK owner tells you nothing about your own car.

Owners of 2024 and later cars have found no working way to update the head unit, and dealers have struggled too

For cars built from 2024, MG moved head-unit updating to the dealer's tool. Owners in Germany, Italy and Spain who bought the interface hardware and successfully updated every other module still could not get the head unit itself to take a newer version - the car rejects the file whatever folder layout or format they try, and months of experimenting produced nothing. Dealers have not fared much better: there are reports of workshops needing a replacement interface sent from China after a failed attempt. The result is a lot of 2024 and 2025 cars sitting on the version they were built with, with known annoyances - radio dropping out, the camera view not handing back to the home screen, screen brightness resetting - left unfixed.

Access is tiered, from general technical information, to an EV high-voltage safety tier, to a security tier for keys and immobiliser work, and is sold as a paid subscription. Replacing an electronic module on an MG4 (body computer, instrument cluster) needs coding to the car, not just fitting the part

Several MG4 control modules, for example the body control module or the instrument cluster, cannot simply be swapped. The official SAIC programming tools reprogram the new unit, write its configuration and write the car's VIN into it before it will work; a bare part swap without this coding step will not function correctly. This is why module-level electrical repairs have to go to a workshop that holds the manufacturer's programming tool, whether an MG dealer or an independent that has licensed it, and why they can cost more than a like-for-like mechanical part.

MG's European warranty is 84 months or 150,000 km, and the battery and motor get the same term, not a longer one

MG's European service book sets the new-car warranty at 84 months or 150,000 km from the date of first registration, whichever comes first, and it transfers to each new owner for whatever is left of it. The same 84 month / 150,000 km term - not a separate longer one - covers the high-voltage battery pack, the drive motor, the intelligent motor control unit and, on dual-motor cars, the secondary axle motor controller. That is a different deal from the Australian one, where the equivalent cover is unlimited kilometres, so a European owner's warranty can run out on distance in a way an Australian owner's cannot. The visits alternate between a Type A inspection and a fuller Type B. Checking the car's control-unit software and upgrading it to the latest version is a listed item at every scheduled service, not an optional extra

Under 'After Maintenance and Repair', MG's own maintenance schedule lists, for both the Type A and the Type B service, checking the software version of the electronic control units and upgrading to the latest version if one is available - alongside resetting the maintenance interval indicator, reading and clearing fault codes and checking the control systems' status. In other words the manufacturer treats a software check as routine maintenance work, not as something only done when a fault is reported. That is a concrete thing to put in front of a service adviser who says updates are only applied against a complaint. Ask at booking for the software check to be carried out and for the before and after versions to be written on the invoice.

In dusty or sandy conditions MG says check the cabin filter every 5,000 km, far more often than the service schedule

MG's special maintenance instructions say that if the car is driven in dusty or sandy areas the air conditioning filter element should be checked every 5,000 km and replaced as needed. That is many times more frequent than the scheduled replacement, which appears against only one of the two inspection types and so comes round every other service. Anyone on unsealed roads, or parking under trees, or driving through a dry summer, should treat the filter as a consumable to look at rather than something the dealer handles on its own timetable - it is cheap, and a clogged filter shows up as weak airflow and a stale-smelling cabin.

MG's own service book says the record affects your warranty entitlement - and names a 'suitably equipped service centre' alongside an MG dealer

The service record pages carry a blunt line that the record is important and could affect your warranty entitlement, so make sure the correct page is stamped and signed at the end of every visit. Just as useful is the phrasing MG uses throughout the book: it repeatedly refers to an MG Authorised Repairer or a suitably equipped service centre, which is the manufacturer's own document acknowledging that the car can be serviced somewhere other than a franchised dealer. When the last service record entry is used, MG expects you to order a replacement book and copy the vehicle details across so the history stays continuous.

MG's own MG4 service sheet requires the dealer to look for outstanding service actions before starting work

The very first line of the official MG4 EV maintenance check sheet, before any physical job, is to check for outstanding service actions on the car. The sheet then requires the technician to connect the diagnostic equipment and read, log and clear all stored fault codes as part of the service. Together those two lines are the most useful thing an owner can quote at a service booking: MG's own procedure obliges the dealer to check whether your VIN has any campaign, bulletin or software action waiting, and to pull the codes out of the car. Ask for both in writing - what service actions were found and whether they were carried out, and what codes were logged before they were cleared. Codes are wiped as part of the job, so if you do not ask for the log you lose the record of any intermittent fault the car has quietly been storing.

The dealer is supposed to plug the car into a charge point at every service to prove charging still works

One of the after-every-service items on the MG4 check sheet is to connect the vehicle to an HV charge point and confirm the charging system is fully functional. It is easy to miss on an invoice and it is worth insisting on, because charge-flap and charging faults are exactly the kind of intermittent problem that owners discover at a public charger at night rather than in a workshop. The same sheet also has the technician check the HV harness and connections both in the engine bay and on the lift, and inspect the HV battery ground cable. If you have had any charging oddity - a flap that will not open, a session that fails to start, a cable that will not release - say so at booking so it is tested against a live charger while the car is in.

MG requires seven powertrain and charging modules to be updated as a matched set, so a single-module update is not the whole job

Bulletin SI-TB2023071101 sets an update rule that explains a lot of half-finished dealer visits. Seven modules - the gateway, the battery management system, the charging control unit, the charge port controller, the suspension/chassis control unit and the two motor power control units - are version-locked together. If a workshop updates or replaces any one of them for any reason, it must read the software level of the other six and bring anything older up to at least the listed level. MG also gives an order of operations, and a later revision of the bulletin adds a specific trap: after updating the charging control unit, the charge port controller can stop responding, and the way to wake it is to plug a charger into the socket, after which its version can be read and updated. Battery management software is specific to your battery size, with different versions for the 51, 64 and 77 kWh cars. If a module has been changed on your car, ask for written confirmation that all seven were checked.

The MG4 has two entirely separate coolant systems, with their own tanks and about 9.6 litres of coolant between them

MG splits cooling into two independent circuits, each with its own pump and its own expansion tank — which is why there are two coolant reservoirs with MIN and MAX marks under the bonnet, and why topping up the wrong one achieves nothing. The drive system circuit (motor, motor control module and the combined charging unit) holds 5.6 litres, and the high-voltage battery circuit (chiller, pack heater where fitted, and the pack itself) holds 4.0 litres, both OAT glycol coolant. MG states coolant should be replaced regularly to keep its properties, and warns that water quality matters because hard or ion-rich water causes scaling and corrosion in the system. Other fluids MG specifies are DOT 4 brake fluid (0.8 litres) and 0.75 litres of Shell E-Fluids E6 iX in the reduction gearbox. Useful when a service quote steps up at a fluids-heavy visit: a coolant service on this car means two systems, not one, and there is gearbox oil in the picture as well.

The corrosion inspection your warranty depends on is a visual check with no trim removed, and it needs the car to be clean first

The corrosion inspection that has to be recorded to keep the anti-perforation warranty alive turns out to be a modest thing. MG's instruction is a two-stage look: raise the car and inspect the underbody sealer, sills, wheel arches and the areas around suspension mounting points with a lamp, then lower it and look over the visible paintwork, with particular attention to the leading edge of the bonnet, the flanges in the front compartment and the lower body and doors. The manual states this is a visual check only and that the technician is not required to remove trim panels or sound-deadening material. It also says the car must be washed first if it is dirty. Two things follow for an owner: turning up with a filthy car undermines the inspection you are paying for, and corrosion hidden behind trim, glass surrounds or seats will not be found at this stage - MG notes those cases need the parts removed and replaced to repair properly.

Replacing the cabin blower or its speed resistor means draining the air conditioning and the coolant first

On the MG4 the heater fan and the little resistor pack that sets its speeds both live inside the air inlet box in the front compartment, and MG's own removal sequence for that box starts by draining the coolant and recovering the refrigerant before anything is unbolted. On most cars a noisy blower or a fan that only works on full speed is a cheap job reached from under the dashboard. Here it is a front-end strip with a regas at the end of it, so expect a quote several times what you would pay on a conventional hatchback. The good news buried in the same pages is that the speed-regulating resistor is a separate, individually replaceable part rather than being built into the fan, so a fan that runs only on the highest setting does not need a whole new blower.

MG's own spec lists the MG4's air conditioning as R-1234yf, not the older R134a

The service manual's air conditioning specification page gives the refrigerant as R-1234yf with a charge of 580 grams give or take 20, and the compressor oil as 150 grams of POE/HS1. That matters to owners for two reasons. R-1234yf is several times the price of the older R134a gas and needs different recovery equipment, so a re-gas is dearer and not every small workshop can do it - check before you book. And if a component such as the condenser, evaporator or a pipe is replaced, MG specifies a set amount of oil to be added back with it, so a repair that only puts gas back in has been done short.

The battery pack, the onboard charger and the charging communication module all have to be coded to the car after replacement

Three of the MG4's most expensive charging-side parts are explicitly not plug-and-play. The manual ends the battery pack refit by requiring the battery management system to be programmed and coded, and says the pack is only fitted to the car after that succeeds. The combined charging unit (the box that handles AC charging and also feeds the 12V system) and the electric vehicle communication controller each get the same instruction. There is also a step before the pack's own electronics module comes out: the diagnostic tool is connected first to back up the parameters held in the battery management system. The practical consequence for an owner is that a second-hand or salvage part cannot simply be bolted in - it needs MG's tool and the right file - and that if charging misbehaves after a big repair, an omitted coding step is a fair thing to ask about.

An MG4 coolant change is not a pour-and-go job: the pumps have to be driven from MG's diagnostic tool to bleed the system

There is no engine to circulate coolant in this car, so both loops are sealed circuits moved by electric pumps. MG's refill procedure therefore ends with the technician plugging in the scan tool, running a dedicated bleed routine for whichever circuit was opened, and keeping the coolant flowing for twenty to thirty minutes while topping up until the level in the expansion tank stops falling. The practical consequence for an owner is that the scheduled coolant replacement needs a workshop with MG's diagnostic software; a garage that simply tips coolant into the tank and screws the cap back on will leave air in the system.

MG requires the drive unit's oil to be replaced if the car has been submerged in water

Tucked into the drain-and-refill procedure for the larger rear drive unit is a single caution: replace the electric drive unit fluid when the vehicle has been soaked in water. It is easy to miss and it matters. The reduction gearbox breathes through a vent plug and is sealed only well enough for normal road use, so a car that has been driven through deep floodwater, or has stood in it, can take water past the vent or the shaft seals into the oil. Water in a splash-lubricated gearbox attacks the bearings and gear faces over time rather than immediately, which is exactly why it gets skipped. For anyone buying used this is a concrete question to ask: if the car has any flood history at all, was the drive unit oil changed, and is it on the service record. For an owner who has driven through water deeper than they meant to, it is a cheap piece of insurance against a much larger bill later.

MG documents rebuilding the MG4's reduction gearbox, but the motor itself may not be opened

This section quietly answers a question owners of leaking cars have been asking. MG publishes a full internal rebuild of the reduction gearbox: differential oil seals replaced on their own, input, intermediate and differential bearings pressed out and back in, circlips and adjustment shims measured and selected to hundredths of a millimetre, sealant applied to the housing joint, and a pressure test of both the dry cavity and the coolant circuit before the unit goes back in. So on paper a gearbox that is weeping oil is a seal-and-gasket repair, not automatically a new drive unit - useful leverage if you are quoted a complete assembly. The motor is the opposite case. MG states plainly that the rotor is strongly magnetic and that nothing beyond the high- and low-voltage cover plates may be dismantled, so the motor is a sealed item that gets replaced rather than repaired. That split is worth knowing before you accept any quote: the geared half of the drive unit is serviceable, the electrical half is not.

The MG4's gearbox oil is one named fluid, and how much goes in depends on which drive unit you have and whether the box was opened

MG specifies a single lubricant for the reduction gearbox across the range - a Shell electric-driveline fluid - so if a workshop is putting in something generic, that is a fair thing to query. The quantity is not a single number, though. The rear unit in the 51 and 64 kWh cars takes about 0.7 litres on a routine drain and refill and 0.8 litres from dry. The larger rear unit used in the 77 kWh car and the four-wheel-drive car takes about 0.75 litres routine and 0.9 from dry. The front unit fitted to the all-wheel-drive car is the thirstiest at roughly 1.05 litres routine and 1.1 from dry, and of course an all-wheel-drive car has two boxes to fill. MG also distinguishes the two fills deliberately: a box that has simply been drained keeps some oil behind on its internals, so it takes less than one that has been stripped and rebuilt. If you are being quoted for a gearbox oil change, that is why the same job costs differently on different MG4s.

Changing an MG4 headlamp means taking the front bumper off first, so the labour costs more than the part suggests

MG's headlamp removal procedure begins by removing the front bumper, and only then do the five retaining bolts come out - they are spread across the front-end module, the wing, the bumper side bracket and the bumper beam. That is why a headlamp quote is never just the price of the lamp. Because every function in the unit is an LED and MG replaces the assembly rather than the individual lamp, one failed function is a whole-headlamp job. The one exception in the front lighting is the direction indicator: the bumper-mounted front indicator lamp is a separate four-screw part, and MG also documents a twist-out bulb holder for a front indicator bulb inside the headlamp, even though its own description elsewhere calls that indicator an LED.

A scan showing a dozen MG4 faults is usually one problem, not a dozen

MG's own fault-code list runs to 1,171 codes across 23 modules, and 222 of the entries are some version of 'lost communication with' another module, plus another 42 for the network dropping out entirely. Those codes do not mean the module that reported them is broken. They mean it could not hear something it expects to hear. One flat 12V battery, one disturbed connector, or one genuinely dead module will light up ten or twenty of them at once right across the car. If a workshop reads the car, hands you a list of fifteen faults and quotes accordingly, the right question is which one of them is the cause and which fourteen are just the rest of the car noticing. MG's own manual is organised the same way, with a whole separate procedure for checking the integrity of each network before chasing any individual code.

The two extra digits after an MG4 fault code are the half that tells you what is actually wrong

MG4 codes come with a two-character suffix that MG calls the failure type byte, and a scanner may show it as something like C0031-13. The main code says which part of the car; the suffix says what kind of failure. MG publishes a dictionary of 102 of them, and 87 are actually used on this car. Take C0031, the left front wheel speed sensor. With suffix 13 it is 'circuit open' - a wiring or connector fault. With suffix 49 it is 'internal electronic failure' - the sensor itself. Same code on the screen, completely different repair and completely different bill. Suffixes in the 11 to 1F range are electrical faults, 30 to 3F are signal faults, 70 to 7F are mechanical, and so on. If a quote is based on the code alone without the suffix, it is a guess.

Most MG4 fault codes are MG's own, so a cheap generic reader will show you a number with no meaning

Of the 1,171 fault codes MG documents for the MG4, only 179 sit in the standard ranges that a generic code reader is designed to recognise. The other 992 are manufacturer-defined - the ones beginning P1, P3, B1, B2, C1, U1 and U2. A basic OBD dongle will usually display those as a bare number, sometimes with a description borrowed from a completely different manufacturer's list, which is worse than no description at all. This is not a lock-out: the codes are all published by MG, and any workshop with the right software reads them properly. But it does explain the common experience of plugging in a cheap reader, getting a code, searching it online and finding an answer that has nothing to do with an MG.

It is the same information the dealer works from. That matters for anyone deciding between a dealer and an independent workshop, because the question is not whether the information exists but whether the workshop has bought access to it. It is reasonable to ask an independent whether they can pull up MG's own procedure for the specific code on your car, and reasonable to be wary of a diagnosis that skips it.

Before handover the dealer must compare every module's software against MG's own database and query any mismatch with MG Technical Support

Step 5 of the PDI has the technician plug the car into MG's diagnostic system, put the vehicle into normal mode, clear all stored fault codes, and then compare the software and calibration level of every control module against what MG's central manufacturer database says the car should be running. Any mismatch has to be recorded and referred to MG Technical Support to establish whether an update is essential. This is a manufacturer instruction, not a courtesy: a car handed over still on factory-shipped software with a recorded mismatch means the PDI was not completed properly. It also gives you the exact phrase to use with a dealer, because 'check the ECU matching status against the manufacturer database' is their own wording, not yours.

MG's service sheet requires the technician to read and write down your battery's state of health at every service

Both MG4 maintenance check sheets carry the same pair of line items: connect the diagnostic system and read, log and clear all fault codes, then check and record the high-voltage battery's state of charge and state of health, with a printed percentage box on the sheet for each. The number owners chase with third-party Bluetooth dongles is therefore one that MG's own technician is instructed to capture on every visit. Ask for it, ask for it written on the invoice, and over the years you build a dated degradation record - much stronger evidence for a battery warranty claim than a range readout, and far more useful than guessing from full-charge kilometres.

At the bottom of both MG4 maintenance check sheets, under the heading 'at every service', is a requirement to carry out an annual corrosion and cosmetic inspection using a dedicated corrosion inspection sheet, and to update the service portfolio to confirm it was done. This is the check that underpins the anti-perforation and paint side of the warranty, and it is the easiest one to skip quietly because it generates no parts and no visible work. If you ever need to claim for corrosion or paint, an unbroken run of completed and stamped corrosion inspections is what makes the claim straightforward - so check the sheet exists in your service pack rather than assuming it does.

The UK MG4 schedule alternates a smaller and a larger service and runs out to seven years or 105,000 miles

MG's UK maintenance check sheet sets out an alternating pattern: an 'A' service at the first year or 15,000 miles and then at years three, five and seven (45,000, 75,000 and 105,000 miles), and a heavier 'B' service at years two, four and six (30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles), whichever falls first in each case. There is a separate low-mileage sheet for cars covering under about 10,000 miles a year, which brings the visit forward to every 12 months or 10,000 miles and alternates A and B annually. The practical point is that the expensive items sit on the B visits and on fixed calendar clocks, so the cost of ownership is lumpy rather than evenly spread - and a low-mileage car is not exempt.

The MG4 has separate cooling circuits for the traction battery and for the motor and power electronics, and MG schedules a full replacement of both coolants at five years or 75,000 miles, whichever comes first, with the technician required to measure and record the coolant strength both before and after the change. Coolant strength is measured and written down at every service in between. This catches out owners who bought an EV expecting no fluids at all: it is a real, non-trivial job, it arrives on a specific visit, and it is worth budgeting for the five-year service in particular rather than being surprised by it.

The low-mileage sheet keeps the same 60,000-mile cap but stretches the calendar side to six years. Two reasons to care: it is another cost that lands on one particular visit, and the routine level check is the point at which a slow gearbox oil leak - a fault UK owners reported before MG produced a breather modification - ought to be picked up before it becomes a problem.

MG tells technicians to reflash the body computer before condemning it, so ask whether that step was done

Almost every fault tree in this section of the manual ends the same way. Once the switch, the wiring and the lamp or motor have been ruled out, the instruction is to reflash the body control module's software and re-test, and only replace the module if the fault is still there. That is a software step, not a parts step, and it sits between you and an expensive control-module replacement on faults as varied as a dead headlight, a dead window, a door that will not unlock and a charge flap that will not open. If a quote lands on your desk for a new body control module, it is fair to ask whether the reflash was carried out first and what the result was.

A failed MG4 headlight function means a whole headlamp assembly, not a bulb

There is no bulb-change step anywhere in MG's diagnosis for the low beam, the high beam, the front position lamp, the daytime running lamp or the front indicator. In each case the test is to take the complete headlamp assembly off the car, fit a known-good one and see whether the fault goes away, and the fix if it does is that assembly. The headlamp levelling motor is inside the same unit, so a headlight that will not adjust is treated the same way. Budget accordingly: a single dead lighting function at the front is a unit replacement, not a consumable. The only place in this whole section where MG mentions a bulb and a filament at all is the number plate lamp, which suggests that is the one old-fashioned bulb left on the car.

Repeatedly through the interior sections, once MG has eliminated fuses, relays and wiring, the instruction is not to replace the failed component but to replace what it calls the upper level assembly - the larger unit the part is built into. That is spelled out for the seat adjustment motor and again for the seat cushion heating element, and the same wording appears for the interior reading lamps. For owners this is a cost warning: on this car a failed seat motor or a dead heating element in the cushion is not treated as a small part swap in MG's own documentation, and the quote will reflect the assembly rather than the component.

Reflash the body control module, and if the light then works, the diagnosis is finished; only if it still does not work is the module replaced. MG is documenting that a light which does not come on, or one that will not switch off, can be a software problem in the body computer rather than a failed lamp or a broken wire. The same pattern appears for the wipers and washers. For an owner this is a real lever: a reflash is a dealer tool operation and much cheaper than a new module, and MG's own procedure requires it to be tried first.

MG publishes a symptom-to-cause path for faults that leave no fault code, so "no codes stored" is not the end of a diagnosis

Every symptom table in MG's own diagnosis manual opens with the same instruction: use this table when a fault has occurred, the control module has NOT stored a diagnostic trouble code, and the cause cannot be seen by eye. In other words, MG's own documentation assumes a large class of real MG4 faults that a scan tool will not name, and it lays out the expected causes and the order to work through them. That matters if you have ever been told your car is fine because nothing showed up on the tester. It is not fine, and MG's own material tells the technician what to do next. The tables cover complaints owners actually make - the aircon smells, the heater is weak, the car will not charge from the wall, the plug is stuck in the car, something judders when you brake - and each one names the parts MG expects to be at fault and the sequence to check them.

Buried in MG's aircon leak-detection page is a warning worth carrying to any independent workshop: use only fluorescent dyes approved by SAIC, because not all dyes are compatible with the compressor oil - some thin the oil out or react with it chemically. MG also says not to overcharge the system with dye, because too much of it degrades the cooling performance. This matters because the glowing-dye leak test is the cheap, standard trick at any aircon shop, and the generic dye in the bottle on the shelf is not necessarily the right one for an electric car's compressor. The MG4's compressor is electrically driven and runs on a specific oil, so oil contamination is not a trivial matter. MG's manual repeatedly tells technicians to replace the assembly above a failed part, not the part itself

A pattern runs right through MG's diagnostic procedures: once a small component is identified as the failure, the instruction is not to replace that component but to replace the next assembly up. A failed seat heating element means replacing the seat cushion assembly it is built into; a failed seat adjustment motor means replacing the assembly above it; interior lamps are replaced as complete units. For an owner this explains why a quote for something that sounds trivial can come back at hundreds of dollars, and it is a fair question to ask the workshop whether the part can be supplied separately or whether MG only lists the larger assembly. It also makes independent repairers worth a call, since they are not bound to MG's parts strategy in the way a franchised dealer is.

That is worth knowing as an owner, because it means a proportion of small electrical faults on this car are software problems in a module rather than broken parts, and the fix costs labour rather than a control unit. If you are quoted for a replacement body control module, it is entirely reasonable to ask whether the reflash step was carried out first and what the result was.

Before anything is measured, MG's diagnostic strategy has the technician establish what normal operation of the system looks like, then compare your car against other examples of the same model in normal working order. The manual states plainly that the condition you describe may be a normal condition, and instructs the technician to explain the check results and how the system works back to you. Later, in the vibration section, MG goes further: if the symptom has been reproduced and the car matches known-good cars of the same model, year and configuration, the technician is to treat it as a potential operating characteristic of the vehicle and check the service bulletins to see whether MG has since decided otherwise. This is the documented route by which a real, repeatable complaint ends up written up as no fault found. It also tells you what actually shifts that outcome: not arguing, but a service bulletin, or a comparison against another MG4 that genuinely behaves differently.

MG will not start diagnosing a fault until the 12V battery is fully charged and no aftermarket kit is affecting the system

The manual opens the diagnostic system check with a list of conditions that must all hold before any of its procedures are valid: the 12V battery fully charged with clean, secure cabling, no blown fuses, clean and correctly positioned earth points in the area of the complaint, all connectors on the suspect circuit properly seated, and explicitly no after-sale add-on equipment affecting the system's operation. In practice that means a car with a tired 12V battery, or with a dashcam, aftermarket camera, amplifier or lighting spliced into the harness, does not meet MG's own preconditions for diagnosis. Two things follow for owners. First, sorting a weak 12V battery before the visit can be the difference between a diagnosis and a wasted day. Second, be upfront about everything that has been added to the car, because MG's process expects the technician to account for it, and hiding it is the fastest way to a bill for time spent chasing your own accessory.

An intermittent fault still leaves a trace: the car stores history codes and a snapshot of the conditions when it happened

MG's diagnostic categories separate a fault code that is present now from one that is only in the car's history, and the manual states that where the symptom is not occurring but the history shows it has occurred, this is an intermittent fault - a real diagnostic category with its own procedure, not a dead end. The car also records freeze frame data, a snapshot of the conditions that were present at the moment a code was set, which MG expects the technician to use both to diagnose the fault and afterwards to recreate the exact conditions and prove the repair worked. That gives owners a much better question than asking whether any faults were found. Ask whether there were any stored or history fault codes, not just current ones, and whether the freeze frame data was read. A car that reports nothing wrong today may still be carrying the evidence of what went wrong last week.

MG's rule for when a module gets reprogrammed is narrow: a new module, a module from another car, or a file issued for your car

The manual states that control modules need reprogramming only in three situations - a new module fitted during repair, a module transferred from another vehicle, or an upgraded software or calibration file having been issued for that vehicle. Separately, the technician is told to check that the module carries the correct calibration or configuration file, and to reprogram it with the latest software if the programming is found to be wrong. Read together, that is the manufacturer's own answer to why a dealer will not simply flash your car on request: unless MG has released something for your vehicle, the process does not call for it. It also gives you the right question. Rather than asking for an update, ask whether the car's module software has been checked against MG's database and whether anything has been issued for your VIN - which is a check the process supports.

MG's own answer to many intermittent electrical faults is cleaning and greasing a connector, not fitting a new part

There is a long passage on why electrical gremlins come and go, and almost none of it points at expensive parts. MG describes fretting: vibration and temperature swings cause movements of a fraction of a hair's width between the two halves of a connector, oxide debris builds up, and resistance rises until the circuit misbehaves. The documented remedy is to unplug the suspect connector, apply insulating grease to both sides of the terminals, reconnect and wipe off the excess. Alongside that it lists broken wires inside intact insulation, terminals crimped onto insulation rather than wire, moisture entering through pierced insulation and corroding a conductor invisibly, and deformed female terminals from repeated unplugging. It also instructs the technician to test the contact of the terminals before replacing a suspect component. If you are quoted a new module for a fault that comes and goes, this is manufacturer documentation that a connector should be eliminated first.

The contents pages of this volume are effectively MG's list of complaints it expects to receive about the MG4, each with its own published procedure and page number. Among them: a charging connector that cannot be unplugged, a charging connector that will not go in, air conditioning peculiar smell, vehicle off-track, a vehicle that cannot keep straight, abnormal wear in tyres, brake judder, a front wiper that fails to return to its parked position, display error or no display, Bluetooth connection failure, rear view camera not displaying, keyless entry coverage abnormal, and no warning given for an obstacle when parking. MG's UK seven-year warranty runs unlimited mileage for only the first year, then is capped at 80,000 miles

The UK warranty statement sets the clock running from the date of first registration and splits the cover in two: unlimited mileage for the first 12 months, then a hard 80,000 mile ceiling for months 13 to 84, whichever comes first. It transfers to each new owner while it still has time and mileage left, which is what makes a used MG4 worth checking the registration date on. Two smaller points sit in the same document: a part replaced under warranty is only covered for whatever is left of the original period, not a fresh term of its own, while a genuine MG part bought and fitted separately carries its own 12 months unlimited mileage.

Each service has to fall within 28 days or 1,000 miles of its due point, and years four to seven depend on a complete service history

Two conditions in the warranty statement decide whether the back half of the warranty survives. First, every main service must be carried out within 1,000 miles (1,609 km) or 28 days of the recommended interval or service anniversary, and the service record must be stamped and endorsed. Second, the fourth to seventh years of cover are conditional on a full and accurate service history in line with MG's schedule, using genuine parts and fluids to the correct specification. Independent servicing does not by itself invalidate the warranty, but MG says faults resulting from work done by a non-authorised repairer may not be covered - so the safest position for an independent-serviced car is genuine parts, correct fluid specs, and receipts kept. The statement also warns that continuing to drive with a known fault can invalidate cover, which is a good reason to get every complaint logged on a job card even when the dealer says it is normal.

If a dealer strips the car to find a fault that turns out not to be MG's responsibility, the owner pays the investigation

The warranty statement says exploratory dismantling charges are only reimbursed as part of a valid claim, and that it is the warranty holder's responsibility to authorise and pay those charges if the failure proves not to be MG's. That is the written basis for something owners find outrageous - being asked to approve or pre-pay a diagnostic fee on a car that is still in warranty. It is not a dealer inventing a charge; it is how the policy is written. The practical defence is to ask, before you sign the authority, what the charge will be, what would make it a valid claim, and to have the symptom and any relevant bulletin or service action recorded on the job card first, because a fault that maps to a known campaign is far less likely to end up billed to you.

Using an MG EV for private hire or taxi work cuts the warranty to three years or 60,000 miles

There is a separate warranty policy for cars used for private hire or taxi work: three years or 60,000 miles for electric and hybrid vehicles, and that reduction explicitly includes the high-voltage powertrain components and the lithium-ion battery. To be eligible at all the car has to be registered as a private hire or taxi vehicle with MG by an MG dealer, and MG says failure to do that may void the warranty entirely. Anyone buying an MG4 to do rideshare or private hire needs to declare it up front rather than after a problem appears, and anyone buying used should ask whether a high-mileage example has been registered that way, because it changes what cover is left.

MG's free UK breakdown cover runs 12 months at a time and only restarts when an MG dealer services the car

MG Assistance is the free breakdown cover supplied with a new MG in the UK. It is not run by MG: the service is provided by the AA (Automobile Association Developments Ltd), with one element underwritten by a separate insurer. It runs for 12 months from the date of first registration, and the only other way it starts is by being activated following a service at an MG Service Partner - so it is a rolling 12-month benefit that depends on you going back to the franchised network. Have the car serviced by an independent garage, or skip a year, and the cover simply lapses. It attaches to the car rather than to you: anyone driving it with permission is covered, along with everyone travelling in it up to the legal seating capacity, to a maximum of eight including the driver. Because it costs nothing there is no refund if you cancel, and MG treats it as part of the All Component Warranty package, though cancelling the assistance does not cancel the warranty. If you hold your own AA membership as well, it is not automatically suspended while this is running.

The genuinely valuable part of MG Assistance is Relay: one recovery of the car and everyone in it to any single UK destination

There are two very different levels of recovery in the booklet and it is worth knowing which one you are asking for. Plain Roadside Assistance only takes the car to the nearest MG Service Partner, or to a local destination of your choice provided it is no further away. Relay is the upgrade, and it applies when the AA cannot arrange a prompt local repair within a reasonable time: it moves the immobilised car, plus everyone who was travelling in it (up to eight people including the driver), to the nearest MG dealer or, if you are more than a quarter of a mile from home, to any other single destination in the UK you nominate. Two limits catch people out. You get one recovery per breakdown - a second or subsequent Relay for the same incident is not covered - and once the car has been moved, arranging and paying for both the repair and any further transport is entirely yours. Ferry and toll charges are excluded, as is the recovery of horses or livestock, and passengers who do not travel with the car get no help with their onward journey.

Break down on your own driveway and you get the least: no hire car, no hotel and no travel costs at all

The quarter-mile line around your home address changes what you are entitled to. Beyond it, you are on Roadside Assistance and, if the car cannot be fixed, potentially on Relay and then Relay Plus. At or within a quarter of a mile of home you are on Home Start instead, and the booklet states plainly that Relay Plus - the hire car, the overnight accommodation and the public transport money - is not available from a Home Start situation. Home Start will send someone to try to fix the car and, if a prompt local repair is not possible, recover it to the nearest MG Service Partner or a location of your choice, whichever is nearer. But the section also lists an exclusion for recovery of the vehicle within a quarter of a mile of your home address, which reads as ruling out a short tow round the corner to your own garage or a local independent. Relay Plus is also unavailable after a road traffic accident, however far from home you are.

Relay Plus is the add-on that keeps your journey going after an immobilising breakdown more than a quarter of a mile from home, and you pick exactly one of three options. A temporary loan vehicle for up to 48 hours, with the benefit capped at the equivalent of a 1600cc saloon - the AA pays the hire charge, comprehensive insurance and collision damage waiver, while you pay fuel, any insurance excess and anything beyond the 48 hours. Or one night's bed and breakfast for the people who were in the car, limited to £100 a head and £300 in total, with meals other than breakfast, drinks and phone calls settled by you before you leave. Or reasonable public transport costs for you and up to seven passengers, on the same £100 and £300 caps, claimed in writing with receipts within 28 days of the breakdown. The hire car is not available at all to a driver under 18 or one who has not held a full UK licence for 12 months, the supplier may want a card deposit, and no replacement vehicle can be supplied with a towbar - so a caravan goes back on the Relay truck with your car.

Ring MG Assistance yourself and stay with the car: a garage you call independently will not be reimbursed

Three procedural conditions decide whether the cover actually pays out. First, you must contact MG Assistance direct on its own number (0800 072 3338 in the UK); the terms state that MG Service Partners and garages approached independently will expect payment, you will have to settle the bill, and the AA is under no obligation to reimburse you - so do not let a passing recovery truck or a helpful dealer arrange it for you. Second, you must be present with the car when help arrives; the AA reserves the right to refuse to attend if the driver is not there, which rules out leaving a dead car at a charging bay and going home. Third, report the breakdown promptly - unreasonable delay in reporting is itself listed as grounds to refuse service. There is also a paperwork trap: if eligibility cannot be confirmed on the call you may be asked to sign a 'Promise to Pay' form covering the cost if it later turns out you were not covered.

Breakdown cover can be refused on private property, and recovery from a ditch, soft ground or snow is arranged at your own cost

Two exclusions decide what happens when the car stops somewhere awkward. Service on private property - the booklet's own example is garage premises - can be refused unless it is established to the AA's satisfaction that the owner or occupier has given permission, so a breakdown in a private car park, a workplace yard or on someone else's land is not automatically covered. Separately, if specialist equipment not normally carried by a patrol is needed because the car has left the highway, is in a ditch, is standing on soft ground, sand or shingle, is stuck in water or snow, or has been immobilised by having its wheels removed, the AA will arrange the recovery but you pay for it. Once the car is back somewhere suitable, normal service resumes. Cover can also be refused if the car was, in the patrol's opinion, dangerous, overladen or unroadworthy before the breakdown, and if the police or another emergency service insist on immediate recovery by a third party, that bill is yours.

MG Assistance is not a policy you buy - it is bundled into the vehicle warranty, so the registered keeper pays nothing for it and cannot cancel it, and if you sell the car the remaining benefit passes to the next registered keeper. The product summary sets the term as 12 months from the date the car was first registered with the DVLA. Cover is 24/7 for a breakdown at home or at the roadside, an accident or vandalism, and includes finding and diagnosing the fault, an attempted repair on the spot, recovery to any single UK destination of your choice, and then either 48 consecutive hours of a replacement vehicle, public transport costs, or overnight accommodation.

MG's breakdown cover excludes faults caused by skipped maintenance, and the driver has to be with the car when the patrol arrives

The exclusions are worth reading before you need them. MG Assistance does not cover faults arising from a lack of routine maintenance, and one of the keeper's stated obligations is to complete repairs promptly following a service notification or a previous patrol visit - so a missed service or an ignored warning is a documented reason to refuse a callout. The driver must be with the vehicle both at the point of breakdown and when the patrol arrives, which rules out leaving a car somewhere and meeting the truck later. The car must also be roadworthy, within 3.5 tonnes and no wider than 2.3 m, no more passengers will be recovered than the vehicle legally seats (up to seven), livestock are not carried, and any excess your motor insurer charges after an accident is yours to pay.

Rubber seals and gaskets are warranted for only 36 months/45,000 miles, so a later leak may not be covered

So a water leak first found after three years, even a seal or vent-gasket fault, can be refused as out of warranty, and the dealer may charge a diagnostic/investigation fee (quoted around 160 pounds plus) simply to look at it. Whether you are ever offered a software update depends on which national MG company sold the car, not on the car

Owners learn about updates either through MG marketing emails if they opted in, or when a dealer mentions it at a scheduled service. Some dealers contact customers proactively and some do not. Updates done alongside scheduled servicing during warranty are complimentary, but an update requested outside a scheduled service can be charged at the dealer's discretion.

The second service costs about $296 and the fourth about $907, and the jump is fluids

Concrete Australian capped-price figures from owners: roughly $296 for the year two service and about $907 for the year four one. The reason for the jump is what falls due at the later visit, which includes transmission fluid, brake fluid, battery coolant and cabin filters rather than anything wearing out. Averaged across the life of the car owners calculate around $250 to $300 a year, but the invoices arrive very unevenly and the year four bill surprises people who budgeted from the year two one.

Infotainment updates are installed from a USB stick, which is why a dealer visit is not always needed

MG's programming and configuration manual shows that the front infotainment control module is updated from a dedicated USB flash drive rather than through the dealer diagnostic system. The diagnostic system is used for configuring the module and for the replacement procedure, but the software upgrade itself is a USB operation performed at the car. The manual specifies a USB 2.0 or better drive, the upgrade package unzipped into the root directory of the drive with no other files present, the drive ejected safely rather than pulled out, and the drive inserted in the front USB port. UK MG4s come with free MG-branded AA breakdown cover that renews each time an MG dealer services the car

New MG4s sold in the UK include MG Assistance, an AA-provided roadside breakdown package, at no extra cost, and there's usually a wallet-sized card in the glovebox with the number on it. It's tied to the car rather than the driver, covers breakdowns within the UK only, and owners report it turning out for punctures, flat 12V batteries and lock-outs, often within the hour. The twist several owners flagged is that having the car serviced at an MG dealer renews the cover for another year, so keeping to dealer servicing keeps the breakdown cover alive. If you already hold personal AA or RAC membership you may be double-covered; some owners asked their own provider to suspend that policy while the manufacturer cover runs.

The reduction gearbox holds only 0.75 litres of oil, throws it around by splash, and breathes through a vent plug

MG specifies Shell E-Fluids E6 iX for the single-speed two-stage reducer, with a dry fill of just 0.75 litres, and says the internals are lubricated by splash - the gears fling the oil about, there is no pump. The casing carries an oil filler plug, a drain plug, both sealed with aluminium washers, and a vent plug assembly with a sealing tube at the top. That tiny oil volume is why the oil leaks owners reported were worth taking seriously: there is very little to lose before the gears are running dry. It is also the context for the breather modification that cured them - if the gearbox cannot vent as it warms up, internal pressure pushes oil past the shaft seals. If you find oil under the rear of the car, this is the assembly to name at the dealer.

MG treated shipping-damaged tyres as outside the warranty, and UK owners recovered the cost through dealer goodwill or consumer law

When a dealer proved an owner's tyres were flat-spotted, MG's importer declined to cover them, citing a tyre warranty of zero miles and zero time, on the basis the tyres are worn from the moment the car is driven off the ship. The dealer instead secured a goodwill contribution (around 400 pounds) toward a replacement set of CrossClimate 2 all-seasons, with the owner paying only the price difference and no fitting or balancing charge. Others pointed out that a genuinely defective tyre is separately covered by consumer-rights law and by the tyre manufacturer, regardless of what the vehicle warranty excludes.

One body computer sits behind the lights, the windows, the door locks and the charge flap

Reading MG's symptom tables end to end, the same part keeps appearing as a possible cause: the body control module. It is listed for a headlight that will not light and one that will not switch off, for indicators, brake lights, reversing lights and the rear fog lamp, for a single dead window, for a door that will not release from the outside, and for a charge flap that will not open. The practical consequence is that a car showing two or three unrelated-looking electrical oddities at once is not necessarily two or three faults. It is worth putting all the symptoms in front of the workshop together rather than reporting them on separate visits, because MG's own documentation points them all at one module.

Trophy owners describe the dipped beam set too low, leaving a dark patch between dip and main, with main beam projecting up into the trees. One owner found the in-cabin levelling dial made no difference to the beams at all. Two owners report the aim was corrected on the mechanical adjusters behind each headlight under the bonnet — one did it himself by comparing against another car, the other had the dealer do it while the car was in for unrelated work. A third owner cautioned that turning those adjusters moved his dipped beam only about 1 cm on the garage wall, so don't expect a large range of adjustment.

Ask for written confirmation of which software updates were actually applied at a service

One Australian owner's practice, and a good one: request written confirmation of the updates performed at each service. Because the MG4 has no over-the-air updating and no owner-visible update log beyond a version string, there is otherwise no record of what was done. The very first numbered item in MG's UK Pre-Delivery Inspection manual for the MG4 tells the technician to check the register of service actions, recalls and technical bulletins and to carry out anything outstanding before touching the rest of the car. The later revision of the manual widened the wording from just 'service action bulletins' to explicitly include recalls and technical bulletins, and the same line heads both PDI tick sheets and both maintenance check sheets. That matters because owners are routinely told a fix is not available for their car: if a campaign existed when your car was prepared, applying it was not optional, and the signed PDI sheet filed with your customer record is the dealer's certificate that it was done. The sagging rear undertray is documented as a guard-to-battery gap, and MG says it is only fixed if you complain

Technical Information TI-20231228, issued by SAIC Motor CEE, describes what owners call the drooping undertray: after a long period of driving, the gap between the rear subframe lower guard and the high-voltage battery can open up. The remedy is an aftersales aluminium alloy bracket (part 11769392) mounted externally on the guard to control the gap, held by two longer bolts (90006778) replacing the originals, all torqued to 4-6 Nm, with the middle mounting point keeping its original bolt. It is quoted at 0.2 hours and claimed under fault code 62 (IMPROPER CLEARANCE). The line that matters most to an owner is in capitals in the document: no proactive action is needed and no marketing activity was run, and the work is to be done only where a customer raises the concern. So a dealer saying there is 'nothing outstanding on your car' is not the same as saying nothing exists - you have to report it.

MG ran a service campaign in December 2022 - SC42, bulletin SI-SC2022122201 - because the driver monitoring system was not adapting well to how customers actually drive. The fix is not a mechanical one: the configuration in three modules (the instrument pack, the infotainment head unit and the front camera module) is reloaded to a newer level, and MG told dealers to reload all three even if the files already looked current. The genuinely useful part for an owner is the verification step MG gives its own technicians: after the campaign the function is renamed in the car's menus from 'Driver Drowsiness Detection' to 'Driver attention warning system'. If your car still shows the old wording, the campaign has not been applied. Later cars moved that hardware onto the main infotainment board, which is why newer cars behave differently. The real fix is having the module replaced under warranty, not another software reflash, so ask the dealer specifically about the DAB module rather than accepting 'no fault found'.

Undertray sag has an Australian bracket fix — bulletin AS-TEC-02112023-01, ask before delivery

Australian owners found the front plastic undertray sagging on new cars, and MG Australia's fix is a metal bracket done under warranty at no cost. Owners who spotted the dip at handover made the dealer do it before they accepted the car; one dealer quoted a couple of hours, another forum member said it is about a ten-minute job. Look under the front of the car at delivery and quote the bulletin number.

When the traction battery management module is replaced, your mileage and battery history are carried across

MG's programming and configuration manual documents a battery management system parameter backup and write procedure. Before a battery management module is replaced, the dealer diagnostic system reads the battery data, mileage, date and other information from the old module, and after fitting writes that information into the new one. The manual gives a separate procedure for the case where the old module can no longer communicate, in which case the backup step is not possible. The execution conditions include that nobody sits in the driver's seat during the operation and that the 12 volt battery is on an external charger.

MG Australia had a list of MG4 software improvements in development in 2025, with the Excite getting fewer of them

An Australian round-up of software work in development listed several items: a refinement of lane keep assist being adapted from the UK version, which reportedly softened the aggressive steering corrections; wireless CarPlay and Android Auto possibly enabled through an add-on device; a new voice command; a toggle for the built-in navigation's suburb alerts; customer-installable map updates via USB under investigation; and the possibility of custom drive mode settings persisting between trips. The article noted these were aimed mostly at Essence and above, with the Excite receiving fewer changes because it has fewer infotainment features to change.

A forum member lists MG bulletins AS-22-TB053, TB059 and TB061 covering CCU, FVCM and BCM

MG's technical bulletins are not published, but one long-standing forum member lists three by number: AS-22-TB053, which updated the charge control unit, gateway and instrument cluster (CCU, GW, IPK); AS-22-TB059 for the forward camera module (FVCM); and AS-22-TB061 for the body control module (BCM). The same thread names SC47 and SCUK001 as service campaigns. Only one poster gives these codes, so treat them as a lead to hand the service desk rather than confirmed MG documentation. The CCU work here was software; a hardware CCU replacement is a separate, much more expensive job.
