MG4 vibration and drivetrain noise

The highway-speed vibration owners report, what has been blamed for it, and what has actually fixed it

This is the most reported single complaint on the car. It is worth reading the whole page before you book anything in, because the reports split into at least three different faults that feel similar from the driver's seat - a wheel or tyre balance issue, a driveshaft or halfshaft problem, and a resonance some owners never resolve at all. What a dealer does about it has varied a lot, so the entries below note who reported what and when.

Scope. Most reported on the XPOWER at around 100-110 km/h, but entries here cover the whole range.

No MG4 recall exists on the Australian register — MG3, ZS, HS and MG6 are on it, the MG4 is not

Australia's national vehicle recall register lists five SAIC Motor Australia recalls — MG3 (Nov 2025), MG HS PHEV and HS +EV (May 2023), MG3 (Jun 2021), ZS (Nov 2018) and MG6 (Aug 2018) — and no MG4 of any variant. Searching the register for the supplier rather than the model returns the same five, so this is not a model-name spelling problem. Don't read it as "nothing was ever fixed": a recall is a safety defect notified to the regulator, and the MG4 work owners talk about — the XPOWER vibration measures, the undertray bracket, the module updates — is service-campaign and technical-bulletin territory, which never appears on this register.

UK owners chasing an XPOWER vibration recall in early 2024 got 'no recall or comment from MG'

On this thread UK XPOWER owners discuss whether a recall is coming for the high-speed steering vibration. One rang his dealer's service department in March 2024 and reported back "No recall or comment from MG". Another points at the Australian steering-damper story, dated 17 November 2023, and adds "I'm pretty sure that's an old story from Australia and that the steering damper does not fix it anyway" — an opinion rather than the experience of someone who had one fitted. Some owners weighed up wheels or suspension changes instead, but held off over warranty. If you want the prevalence figures or the Australian damper campaign details, cite the poll thread and the Australian coverage directly — they are not in this discussion.

Australia issued an XPOWER sales stop for a steering-arm anti-vibration part, and some owners say it did not fix the shake

Australian XPOWER buyers reported a vibration between roughly 80 and 110 km/h (worst near 100), and shortly after delivery the AWD XPOWER was put on a sales stop and recalled for a steering-arm damper / anti-vibration upgrade. One Sydney owner had the new part fitted and said it made no difference, leaving the car back with the dealer. Owners suspect the XPOWER's vibration is a different phenomenon to the tyre flat-spot issue on the two-wheel-drive cars, possibly linked to the dual-motor drivetrain, though tyres and balancing were still in the mix.

An owner poll found ~79% of XPOWER respondents get the steering vibration

A dedicated owner poll on the main MG EV forum recorded roughly 79% of XPOWER respondents experiencing the steering vibration and around 89% wanting an official MG fix, with only about 11% reporting a clean car. This is not a handful of unlucky cars — if a dealer tells you yours is a one-off, the poll is public evidence otherwise. Owners report it in the 90-115 km/h band while cruising.

A worn anti-roll bar bushing means a whole new anti-roll bar, front or rear, because MG bonds the bushes onto the bar

MG's first suspect for a knock from the front suspension is the anti-roll bar bushing - but the bushes are vulcanised onto the bar as a single piece and the clamps are pressed on with special tooling, and the manual states plainly that neither can be taken apart or replaced on its own. The rear bar is written up the same way. So the cheap-sounding fix of 'just doing the bushes' does not exist on this car: it is a new bar. The drop links are the same story, since their ball joints are not serviceable and a rattly link means a new link. The converse is worth knowing too, because it is where the money is saved: MG does allow the front lower arm's ball joint and its rear bush, the trailing arm bush and the bearing in the top of the front strut to be replaced individually, so not every suspension complaint is a whole-assembly bill.

Rumbling and vibration at highway speed has several causes, and tyre pressure is the one to check first

A long-running thread on vibration that gets worse above about 110 km/h, described as like driving over concrete slabs, never reached a single answer. The causes that came up were under-inflated tyres, including cars delivered from the dealer at the wrong pressure, an out-of-true or sawtooth-worn tyre, and an undertray not properly secured so that it transmits into the body. Check pressures against the door pillar label before anything else, since that costs nothing and was the cause for more than one owner.

Highway rumble is frequently flat-spotted factory tyres from weeks at sea, and a fresh set cures it

The most common cause owners pinned down for a rumble and steering-wheel vibration that begins around 80-90 km/h and worsens with speed was the original Chinese-made Continental tyres developing flat spots or deformation ridges while the car sat for weeks at the docks and on the boat. In several cases a technician pulled a tyre and showed visible ridges running across the inner carcass. Swapping wheels onto a smooth demonstrator (or vice versa) isolated the tyres, and fitting any fresh set made the rumble disappear. The same pattern turned up in the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey and Australia, so it is not a one-off.

MG's own cause list for vibration at speed puts the tyres first and wheel balance second, ahead of any suspension part

For the complaint MG calls "vehicle jitters during driving", the manufacturer's ordered check list is: the tyre tread, looking for an uneven surface or something embedded in it; then whether the wheels are still within the allowable dynamic balance range; then the front suspension springs; and only last, the front dampers. The manufacturer is saying plainly that a shaking MG4 is a tyre and wheel-balance problem until proven otherwise. That is exactly what MG4 owners worked out for themselves after chasing highway vibration for months, and it is the strongest argument for insisting on a proper wheel balance and a hard look at the tyres before anyone opens up the suspension.

MG's first two suspects for a front suspension knock are the anti-roll bar bushing and its drop link

For abnormal noises while driving, the front suspension procedure runs in a deliberate order: the front anti-roll bar bushing, then the anti-roll bar link, then the lower control arm ball joint, then the control arm rear bushing, then the wheel hub, then the damper, and last the subframe. The two cheapest and most accessible parts on the car come first and the most expensive comes last. So a knock or clonk over bumps from the front of an MG4 is, on MG's own expectation, most likely a worn anti-roll bar bush or drop link - parts that are inexpensive and quick to change - rather than a damper or hub. That is a useful thing to know before accepting a large quote.

For a knock from the rear, MG's first two suspects are the upper and lower swing arm bushings

The rear suspension abnormal-sound procedure has nine steps and opens with the rear upper swing arm bushing, then the rear lower swing arm bushing. Only after those does it look at the damper leaking oil, a loose rear hub, the anti-roll bar link and its rubber bushing, the lateral push rod bushing, the trailing arm bushing, and finally a loose rear subframe. MG4 owners have been reporting a clunk from the rear - often the left side - over speed bumps and when moving off, and this is the manufacturer stating what it expects that to be: worn rear arm bushings first, everything else after. A loose rear hub and a loose subframe both being on the list is also worth noting, because those are checks rather than parts.

MG blames steering noises on loose bolts first and a dry steering column last

Owners have reported clicking or knocking from the front when turning, and MG has a documented cause list for exactly that. Noise from the steering gear or from the column is expected to come from, in order: loose steering gear retaining bolts, a worn rack, loose upper steering column retaining bolts, and finally an upper steering column that is poorly lubricated or worn. Two of those four are simply bolts that have worked loose, which is a cheap fix and a plausible explanation for a noise that appears, stays roughly constant and never turns into a failure. The last one - a dry column - is also a lubrication issue rather than a broken part. If a dealer tells you a steering noise cannot be found, this is the sequence they are meant to have worked through.

MG's own order for an MG4 that shakes at speed is tyre condition, then wheel balance, then springs and dampers

The highway shake that MG4 owners have argued about for years has a manufacturer cause list, and it is short. For a car that jitters while driving, MG says check the tyre tread is smooth and free of anything embedded in it, then check the wheels are dynamically balanced within tolerance, then look at whether a front spring has lost its rate, then check the front damper for leakage or damage. Nothing else is on the list. That is first-party support for what owners worked out themselves: the vibration is overwhelmingly a tyre and balance problem, not a mysterious chassis defect, and a proper balance or a fresh set of tyres is the sensible first spend. The related complaint of uneven tyre wear starts with tyre pressure and balance too, with wheel alignment checked only at the very end.

Front lower-arm bushes debond from 12,000 miles — MG covers ball joints and bushes for 36 months

Four UK owners in one Feb 2026 thread report front lower suspension arm bushes splitting or debonding well inside warranty: an MOT major fail at 22,000 miles with both bushes debonded, cracked bushes found at a second service at 12,000 miles, and worn bushes at 18,000 miles with a non-warranty quote of GBP750 to replace them. A forum moderator states ball joints and bushes are covered for 36 months, so push for warranty — though one owner waited four months while MG insisted on a re-inspection three months later. Do not wait for a noise: the owner who failed his MOT had no suspension noises and normal handling, and a 45,000-mile car in the same thread was fine, so ask for the bushes to be inspected specifically at each service.

A clicking noise from the front when turning is commonly reported, and in one case did not worsen over 60,000 km

Several Australian owners describe a click or tick from the front of the car, one specifically when turning right and traced towards the steering column, another suspected to be a wheel bearing at eighteen months. The useful data point is longevity: one owner first noticed the ticking at around 20,000 km and reported it unchanged at 80,000 km, with no deterioration. That does not make it right, but it suggests that in at least one case it was a noise rather than a failure in progress.

The 'Stage 2' fix replaces the front cross member, four motor mounts and rear subframe

Beyond the steering damper, MG authorised a much larger hardware job owners call the "Stage 2" fix: front cross member, all four motor mounts and the rear subframe, the stated purpose being to change the angle of the driveshafts, which are named as the excitation source of the vibration. Results are genuinely mixed — one Australian owner reported his car fixed and still fine on the freeway well afterwards, following a job involving motor removal, subframe replacement, bushes and fluids over about three days; another Australian member is reported to have had the fix without it curing the problem, and UK members say there is now evidence it doesn't work. Some UK owners had parts delivered to the dealer and then had the authorisation withdrawn by MG before work started.

Asked outright, no XPOWER owner in this thread had had the vibration fixed — including one whose damper was already fitted

A thread asking whether one single XPOWER owner had had the vibration fixed produced no success story. The Australian owner who started it had already had the steering damper fitted and was still vibrating hard at 10,000 miles, with a road-force test proposed next; others put it down to a design flaw that would be expensive to cure properly. The nearest things to relief were new tyres and about 40 psi cold pressures — which one UK owner said made all the difference while the Australian owner found they changed nothing — and one owner whose onset speed drifted from around 65 mph to around 80 mph as mileage built up. Treat the damper as a first step, not a fix, and keep the job open with the dealer afterwards.

Most test drives never reach the speed the XPOWER vibration appears at

An Australian owner petition launched in March 2024 makes the point that buyers only discovered the vibration after purchase because typical test drives do not reach sustained highway speed, and describes long-distance travel in affected cars as unpleasant to unbearable above 100 km/h. Abrupt lift-off after hard acceleration can trigger a whole-car shudder on the XPOWER

Owners describe a distinct, separate event: hard acceleration in Sport from roughly 65 to 110 km/h followed by a sudden throttle lift produces a violent shudder through the whole car for a second or two, as if the rear axle went to full regen while the front was still driving. It is intermittent and did not reproduce on demand, and community opinion leans toward a motor-control or torque-handover software glitch rather than wear. Owners running higher tyre pressures around 40-42 psi report less highway vibration

For owners chasing the highway vibration that has never been definitively resolved, one approach that has helped is running pressures higher than placard, around 40 to 42 psi. It is a trade: higher pressure firms up the ride and can change wear patterns, but several owners report it noticeably quieter and smoother at speed. Combined with the fact that many cars are delivered badly under-inflated, pressure is the first and cheapest variable to work through before anything mechanical is suspected.

The pedestrian warning sound cuts out at very low speed, which is when pedestrians most need it

The acoustic vehicle alerting system that makes the car audible to pedestrians stops below a certain low speed. That is how these systems are designed and it is common across electric cars, but it means the car is silent exactly when creeping through a car park or reversing slowly, which is where people step out in front of you. The XPOWER vibration is a frequency band: a drone at 100-120 km/h, gone by 140

An Australian owner and former mechanic describes it not as a wheel-balance wobble but as a drone resonating through the steering wheel that appears in a specific frequency window — absent below about 90 km/h, present roughly 100-120 km/h, and gone again above about 120-140 km/h. That speed-window behaviour is the useful diagnostic: a wheel or tyre imbalance gets worse with speed, this does not. Note the speed and whether it disappears again when you report it.

A small number of cars have suddenly limited their own speed at low charge, and needed a motor replacement

Australian owners reported cases of a car abruptly limiting speed when accelerating above about 90 km/h with the battery somewhere around 20 to 30 percent, with the suspected cause being transmission fluid leaking into the motor and the remedy a full motor and gearbox replacement. This appears to be rare rather than a pattern, but it is the kind of failure worth recognising: a sudden loss of available power at speed is not normal behaviour at that state of charge and should be reported immediately rather than driven around.

MG's own bulletin recognises the XPOWER vibration at about 110 km/h and lays out a four-step remedy in order

Technical Information TI-20240321-EH32, issued by SAIC Motor International for all overseas markets, states plainly that the XPOWER can produce a vibration felt through the steering wheel and the seat at around 110 km/h, and that not every car does it. MG's engineering explanation is that at speed the driveshafts act as an excitation source and the vibration is carried into the seat and wheel through the body structure. The prescribed order of investigation is: set the tyre pressures to the recommended values and retest; road-force test the tyres and replace any that fail; fit the steering wheel damper and retest; and only for customers still complaining severely after that, consider the revised suspension parts. This is the document to name if a dealer has told you the shake is normal, cannot be reproduced, or that nothing exists for it.

There is a revised XPOWER suspension for severe vibration, in production from 21 February 2024, but MG tells dealers not to fit it routinely

The same MG bulletin goes further than the steering wheel damper. It says the engineering team evaluated a new suspension solution that meets the expectations of customers most sensitive to vibration, and lists the parts involved: revised left and right rear mounts, a revised front upper mount crossmember and a revised rear suspension frame. MG is careful about it - the work is described as technically demanding, recommended only for individual customers with severe complaints, and explicitly not suitable for a blanket service campaign. Two production breakpoints are given: the steering wheel damper went into build on 15 October 2023 and the revised suspension on 21 February 2024, so an XPOWER built after that date should already have both. For an owner who has had the damper fitted and still feels the shake, this is the documented next step rather than the end of the road.

The XPOWER steering wheel damper is a documented part built into the horn mechanism, for cars produced before 15 October 2023

Bulletin SI-TB2024011601 describes the steering wheel damper repair in detail. The dealer first confirms the complaint and checks that the car was produced before the 15 October 2023 breakpoint - after that date the damper is factory-fitted. The airbag comes off, the old horn mechanism (three bolts) is removed and a new damped assembly, part number 11623528, goes in its place; it is a 0.4 hour warranty job claimed under fault code 36 (VIBRATES), and MG restricts it to all-wheel-drive cars. One line in the bulletin is worth knowing: MG warns that the springs and rubbers in the new part can shift out of position in the packaging, and shows which positions are right and wrong. A damper assembled with a displaced spring is a plausible reason why some owners report the fix made no difference.

Some MG4 suspension parts cannot be replaced on their own and some can, which is worth knowing before you accept a quote

MG spells out what is serviceable in the suspension, and it cuts both ways. Not separately replaceable: the anti-roll bar bushings and their clamps, front and rear — the bushes are vulcanised onto the bar and the clamps are fitted with special tooling, so a worn bush means an anti-roll bar assembly; and the ball joints in the anti-roll bar links, so a knocking link is a new link rather than a repair. The front strut upper mounting support is a single assembly that cannot be split, although its top bearing can be changed on its own. Separately replaceable, on the other hand: the front lower control arm's ball joint and its rear bush, so a worn front ball joint need not mean a complete new arm, and the rear trailing arm's hollow rubber bush. MG also notes that coil springs vary with the powertrain and specification and are identified by a colour code painted on the coil, so a replacement spring has to match rather than being generic to the model.

A split CV boot does not need a whole new MG4 driveshaft, but the labour behind it is a dismantled suspension corner

Unusually for a modern car, MG documents the driveshaft as a repairable assembly rather than a throwaway one: there are separate remove-and-refit procedures for the inner tripod joint, the tripod boot, the outer constant velocity joint and the CV boot, each with new clamps, a new circlip and fresh grease. So a torn boot or a clicking joint is, on paper, a parts-and-grease repair rather than a complete shaft. The catch is what it takes to get the shaft out: the rear wheel bracket has to be freed from five separate suspension links, every one of those bolts and nuts is single-use and thrown away, a special puller separates the shaft from the drive unit, and the axle nut is a new one tightened in a three-stage sequence. That is why a 'small' boot job can still come back as a substantial quote, and why some workshops will simply fit a complete shaft instead.

Wheels arriving significantly out of balance from the factory is a confirmed cause of the vibration

Separate from tyre flat spots, several owners found the factory wheel balancing was badly out. One owner's tyre fitter recorded three of the four wheels well off (weights out by 20-30 grams on multiple positions); another dealer described the wheels as 'miles out'; an Australian Long Range had its rears found a long way out at the 1000 km check. A proper rebalance made a large difference or fully cured the vibration in these cases, which points to slack quality control at the factory rather than a design flaw.

MG names four places the reduction gearbox can leak oil, and the driveshaft seals and drain plug washer come first

For an oil leak from the electric drive transmission - the single-speed reduction gearbox that sits with the motor - MG lists exactly four sources and works them in order: the driveshaft (axle shaft) oil seals worn or damaged, the drain plug gasket damaged, the joint face where the two halves of the drive unit housing meet, and the seal ring on the cooling water pipe fitting. That is worth having, because MG4 owners in the UK reported reduction gearbox oil leaks that went months without a settled explanation before a breather modification emerged as the fix. MG's May 2022 manual predates that and does not mention the breather at all - its expected causes are all seals and gaskets. So if you have an oil weep from around the drive unit, there are two separate conversations to have with a dealer: the seal and gasket list here, and the later breather modification.

MG's own test for splitting a vibration between tyres and driveline: does it survive a coast in Neutral

MG's vibration analysis table sorts every felt or heard vibration by two questions before any part is touched. First, is it sensitive to road speed or to motor speed. Second, and the one an owner can answer on any quiet stretch of road, does it still happen when you coast in Neutral. A vibration that persists while coasting in Neutral points MG's own diagnosis at the tyres and wheels. One that changes with torque, load or steering input points instead at the driveshaft or suspension. On an MG4 that first branch is powerful, because so many highway rumble and shudder complaints on this car turn out to be tyres or wheel balance. Doing the coast test yourself, safely and on a level road, and reporting the answer, aims the dealer at the right half of the car before the wheels come off.

The words you use to describe a noise map to specific parts in MG's own table, and a whine points at the gearbox

MG classifies vehicle noise into named bands and ties each to a likely source. A deep boom or drone in the 20 to 60 Hz range, described as a bowling ball down an alley, is road-speed related and may come with no vibration you can feel at all. A moan or drone at 60 to 120 Hz sits with a perceptible surge. A howl runs 120 to 300 Hz. A whine at 300 to 500 Hz - MG's own comparisons are mosquitoes, turbine engines and vacuum cleaners - is road-speed sensitive, changes with torque or load, and is listed against the transmission. On an MG4 the transmission is the single-speed reduction gearbox, which is exactly the part owners have had oil-leak and noise trouble with. Describing what you hear in these terms, and saying whether it changes when you lift off or accelerate, routes the diagnosis far faster than reporting a general noise.

MG explains why your vibration disappears at the dealer: a warm car, an empty car and the wrong road all hide it

There is a whole page on vibration complaints that cannot be reproduced, and it reads as a list of excuses that owners can pre-empt. MG says tyres develop a flat spot after standing and cooling, and that tyres harden when cold so irregular wear shows up far more obviously than once they are hot - so a car driven across town to the workshop may already be too warm to demonstrate the fault. It also notes the opposite: a car left standing in the cold may never reach operating temperature during the attempt. Then the practical ones. The problem may only appear with the car loaded, or towing, and the car is usually empty when they try to reproduce it. And the road matters: the test route near the workshop may be nothing like the road you actually drive on, and MG accepts that the customer may only meet the vibration on one particular road. If your vibration is real, ask for a cold first-drive-of-the-day test, loaded the way you normally load it, on your road with you in the car.

Wind noise at speed usually comes from the quarter light, and dealers often say there is no bulletin for it

A whistle or roar that appears somewhere between about 50 and 80 km/h and grows with speed is most often the small fixed quarter light window not being properly sealed, rather than the door seal or the mirror. Owners are clear it is a fault rather than a characteristic, but dealer response has been inconsistent: several were told no service bulletin exists, while at least one owner had the quarter light replaced. The workaround owners use is residue-free tape around the quarter light edge, which noticeably reduces it.

The vibration only shows on a sustained highway run, so it can pass a test drive and town driving unnoticed

Owners note the rumble and vibration only appear once you are holding a steady speed above roughly 90-100 km/h; it is absent in town and in slower traffic. One Australian owner said even a dealer test drive could miss it because you have to be cruising at highway speed for several seconds before it builds. Another buyer confirmed the problem never surfaced around town and only appeared once he got onto the motorway two months into ownership. That makes it easy to overlook when buying, especially a used car.

Check your tyre pressures on day one: some cars have arrived at under 20 psi

Australian owners repeatedly report new cars delivered with tyre pressures well below specification, in some cases under 20 psi, which is low enough to be dangerous as well as to trigger warnings. Setting them to around 36 to 37 psi both stops the warnings and puts the car where it should be. This is the single most worthwhile check to do before you drive a new MG4 away, and it also removes the most common cause of the highway vibration owners chase for months.

MG itself blames long storage and flat-spotted tyres for part of the high-speed vibration, and requires a road-force test

Owners worked out for themselves that MG4s vibrating on the highway were often sitting on tyres flat-spotted by weeks of standing still in transit or in stock. MG's own bulletin says the same thing: poor stock maintenance during storage, such as long-term parking without the car being moved, causes tyre flat spots which intensify steering wheel and body vibration. It also makes a road-force test part of the official inspection sequence - not an ordinary balance, but a test of the tyre's road force, with any tyre that fails to be replaced before anything else is done to the car. That matters when a dealer says the wheels balanced fine, because an ordinary balance will not find this.

MG warns in its own manual that aftermarket wheels make the car deviate and shimmy after bumps

The wheel alignment chapter states plainly that fitting aftermarket wheels causes extra deviation of the vehicle and greatly increases the scrub radius, because a replacement wheel moves the tyre's centre line away from where the suspension geometry expects it. The consequence it then names is severe shimmy after hitting an uneven road surface, on top of reduced straight-line stability. This is first-party confirmation of something owners usually only hear second hand: the MG4's front geometry is designed around a particular wheel offset, and a wheel with the wrong offset is not merely a cosmetic choice, it changes how the car tracks and how it reacts to a pothole. None of that shows up on an alignment printout, because scrub radius is designed in and cannot be measured or adjusted afterwards.

MG's warranty gives tyres nothing at all, and wheel balancing and alignment only three months or 1,000 miles

The exceptions table lists tyres as zero months and zero miles - the manufacturer's warranty simply does not cover them - and puts wheel balance and wheel alignment on a three month or 1,000 mile term. That is the paperwork behind two familiar owner complaints: flat-spotted tyres after weeks at sea, and wheels that arrive from the factory noticeably out of balance. If your new MG4 vibrates on the motorway, the balance claim has a very short life and the tyre itself is not a warranty item at all, so raise it immediately and in writing, and expect any remedy to come as dealer goodwill or under consumer law rather than under the warranty. Other short-life wear items - wipers, bulbs, fuses, remote batteries, an air-con re-gas - are covered, but only for six or twelve months, and general wear and tear items other than tyres are covered only through the first 12 months or up to the first chargeable service.

MG4 Long Range 77 steering vibration above 100 km/h was the factory tyres, not balance

Separate from the XPOWER drivetrain problem, non-XPOWER MG4 owners report a steering vibration starting above 100 km/h and worsening with speed, on cars that balanced perfectly. Repeat balancing, rotating and swapping front-to-rear changed nothing; fitting four new tyres cured it completely in more than one case, including a car that had run its original Bridgestone Turanzas to 50,000 km. If your MG4 vibrates and the wheels check out, suspect the tyres themselves before chasing suspension work.

Raising XPOWER cold tyre pressure to ~40 psi largely kills the vibration

Several owners found the high-speed vibration largely disappears with cold pressures raised to about 40-41 psi, well above the placard setting, at the cost of a harsher low-speed ride. One owner also found the dashboard was reporting 2.7 bar while a trusted gauge read only 36 psi on the same tyre, so check with your own gauge rather than trusting the TPMS readout. This is a mitigation, not a repair — MG's own bulletin lists pressure adjustment as only one of four steps.

MG's own tyre pressure figure is 2.5 bar, about 37 psi, rising at the rear when the car is loaded

MG's data table gives 2.5 bar / 37 psi front and rear at half load, and 2.5 bar front with 41 psi rear when the car is fully laden, on 205/60 R16 96H or 215/55 R17 95V tyres fitted to 6.5J x 16 or 7.0J x 17 rims. Two useful conclusions. Owners who have run around 40 to 42 psi to settle highway vibration are not running wildly high pressures by the manufacturer's own reckoning — that is essentially MG's laden rear figure. And this gives you a first-party reference to check a newly delivered car against, on a model where cars have arrived from the compound seriously under-inflated.

Raising XPOWER cold pressures to 40-41 psi by hand gauge killed the highway hum for several owners

One XPOWER owner chasing a hum and vibration found his dash showed about 2.7 bar (~39 psi) while a reliable gauge read 36 psi cold on the same tyres, so he had been running under-inflated — that is one owner's measurement, not a proven trait of every car, so check yours with your own gauge rather than assuming the offset. Setting 40-41 psi cold by hand gauge is what several owners say worked: one reported the hum gone and the vibration "very very slight" on the motorway after rebalancing had achieved nothing, another hardly felt it at 268 kPa over 200 miles. The caution raised in the same thread is inner-edge wear, not centre wear — a lightly loaded car at high pressure loaded the rear inner edges and castellated the tyres.

The MG4 is unusually sensitive to tyre imperfections, so even budget replacement tyres often kill the vibration

A recurring theme across years and markets is that this car reacts to tyre and balance imperfections other cars simply tolerate. A tyre specialist told one owner the MG4 was among the most sensitive cars he saw to any poor tyre fitting, and fitters advised two-point balancing that few shops can do. Tellingly, owners who could not afford premium tyres reported that fitting fresh budget tyres (Goodride, Falken) also completely cured the steering-wheel shake. That suggests the fix is a fresh, well-fitted, well-balanced set rather than any particular premium brand.

Because standard balancing and even a dealer inspection can pass a tyre that still causes the vibration, owners repeatedly recommend a road-force (Hunter Roadforce) balance at a tyre shop that has the machine. In one case in Belgium the machine showed that three of the four tyres were defective. The machine can detect production faults and flat-spotting and prints a layout telling the fitter how to index each tyre on its rim. Brake judder is diagnosed by disc runout and thickness, and MG allows just three causes for it

Judder or shudder felt through the pedal under braking gets a three-step procedure. Check the pad for dirt or oil contamination; check the disc for abnormal wear, meaning front or rear thickness below the service limit or runout beyond the maximum; and check the caliper for damage. That is all MG lists. The important part for owners is that MG measures runout - how far the disc wobbles as it turns - rather than talking about "warped" discs. On a car where regeneration means the friction brakes are barely used and the discs corrode, surface pitting and scoring translate directly into runout, which is why judder often shows up after a period of light use or long storage.

MG sends judder under braking through the steering joints first, and only then to the brakes

A shudder or shake felt when you brake is filed under the steering system in MG's manual, not the brake system. The path is: check the outer track rod end for wear, then the inner track rod, then the steering intermediate shaft for wear or looseness, then the steering rack itself. Only when all four have been cleared does the manual explicitly redirect the technician to the brake system's own judder diagnosis. That is the manufacturer stating that worn steering joints are a more likely explanation for braking judder than warped discs. It is a useful thing to know on an MG4 in particular, because the car's regenerative braking means the friction brakes do relatively little work, so "it must be the discs" is a weaker assumption here than on a petrol car. If you are quoted for discs to cure a brake judder, it is fair to ask whether the track rods and the steering shaft were checked.

For brake judder and for pulling under braking, MG's first suspect is a contaminated brake pad

Two of the most common braking complaints - the car pulling to one side when you brake, and a shudder felt through the pedal or the wheel - share the same opening check in MG's manual: look at the brake pads for dirt or oil contamination. Only after that does MG move to disc condition, and there the test is specific, being whether the disc has worn below its minimum thickness or whether it runs out of true by more than the allowed amount. A stuck or damaged caliper comes next, then the pipework and master cylinder. The useful takeaway is that a judder or a pull is not automatically a warped disc or a failed caliper; contamination, often from a fluid leak or grease picked up during a service, is what MG expects to find first, and that is a much cheaper outcome.

If the ABS kicks in under gentle braking, MG's first suspect is a badly fitted brake pad

MG treats the complaint of a wheel locking and the ABS activating when you have barely touched the pedal as a recognised fault with only three expected causes: a brake pad that has not been fitted correctly, a caliper that is sticking, and a damaged master cylinder. The pad-fitment answer is the interesting one for owners, because it points straight at recent work. If your MG4 starts chattering and shuddering through the pedal on light braking shortly after a pad change, a service or any wheel-off job, MG's own expectation is that the pad may simply be in wrong. That is a warranty or comeback conversation with whoever did the work, not a mystery to live with, and it is a safety issue because braking becomes unpredictable.

MG checks the steering linkage before the brakes when an MG4 shakes under braking

A shudder through the wheel when you brake is usually blamed on warped discs, and on an MG4 with lightly used rear brakes that is a reasonable guess. MG's own order is different. "Shaking When Braking" sits in the steering chapter, and the first three checks are the outer track rod ends, the inner track rods and the steering intermediate shaft, looking for wear or looseness. Only after the steering gear itself has been cleared does the procedure hand off to the brake system's own judder routine. So if a workshop has skimmed or replaced discs and the shake is still there, the manufacturer's next place to look is the steering joints, not more brake parts.

Better tyres reduced the XPOWER vibration for most, but did not cure it — the thread starter blamed the driveshafts

On the XPOWER tyre-upgrade thread, owners who moved off the original fitment to Michelin Pilot Sport 5 or CrossClimate 2 mostly report the vibration reduced rather than gone. The thread starter, asked directly whether his had been cured by the Pilot Sports, answered "Are the vibes gone? In a word....... No. Much reduced? Yes", and concluded the real cause was the driveshafts not being perfectly balanced — a year later he was calling it a manufacturing and quality-control problem in the driveshafts and suspension mountings. Rebalancing likewise "did reduce vibes, but did not dispel them completely". One owner does claim his CrossClimate 2s "solved the problem not only with regards vibration but also the grip", so a cure is contested rather than unheard of. MG names badly fitted aftermarket electronics as a standard cause of intermittent faults, and gives the tell: the fault only appears while the accessory is in use

In its list of causes of electrical interference the manual singles out incorrectly fitted non-genuine aftersales accessories by name - added lamps, amplifiers, motors, two-way radios, remote starters, alarm systems, onboard phones - and notes that these can generate interference while they are operating but produce no fault at all when they are switched off. Aftermarket add-on equipment also appears in MG's headline list of the causes of intermittent faults, alongside connectors, harnesses and driving conditions. That gives owners a genuinely useful home test for a gremlin that comes and goes: note whether the symptom only ever shows up while a particular added device is powered. The vibration section makes the same point mechanically, warning that an incorrectly fitted accessory can become a path that transmits and amplifies vibration from a rotating part into the cabin, using badly mounted pedals as its example.

A window that binds or stalls is blamed on the rubber channel it slides in, not on the motor

MG's routine for a stuck window regulator has only two steps, and neither involves a scan tool. First, check the glass guide rail for anything jammed in it, or for deformation or damage. If that is clear, MG says the window glass run channel weatherstrip - the rubber channel the glass runs in - may be fouled by foreign matter, deformed or damaged, and expects the system to work normally again after cleaning or replacing it. That is the manufacturer saying that a window which is slow, judders, stops part way or keeps tripping its anti-pinch is most often the rubber rather than the motor or the regulator. Cleaning the channels out, including their inner faces, and keeping grit and leaf litter from collecting in them is something an owner can do before paying for a diagnosis, and it is the cheapest thing on the list by a wide margin.

Wipers that stop in the wrong place are documented by MG as loose or missing arm and linkage bolts

MG has a separate diagnosis for wipers that do not return to their parked position, and for wipers that judder or make a noise as they sweep. In both cases the causes MG expects are mechanical and cheap: a bent wiper arm, loose or missing retaining bolts on the arm, a deformed or loose linkage mechanism, or loose bolts on the motor mounting - with the motor itself only suspected once all of that has been ruled out. This matters because owners have separately noticed that the washer jets can end up blocked by where the wiper arm sits when parked. MG's own material says the park position is set by hardware that can work loose, so a wiper that has drifted out of position is a fixable fitting problem rather than something to live with.

MG publishes a symptom-to-cause path for faults that leave no fault code, so "no codes stored" is not the end of a diagnosis

Every symptom table in MG's own diagnosis manual opens with the same instruction: use this table when a fault has occurred, the control module has NOT stored a diagnostic trouble code, and the cause cannot be seen by eye. In other words, MG's own documentation assumes a large class of real MG4 faults that a scan tool will not name, and it lays out the expected causes and the order to work through them. That matters if you have ever been told your car is fine because nothing showed up on the tester. It is not fine, and MG's own material tells the technician what to do next. The tables cover complaints owners actually make - the aircon smells, the heater is weak, the car will not charge from the wall, the plug is stuck in the car, something judders when you brake - and each one names the parts MG expects to be at fault and the sequence to check them.

MG's own diagnostic process tells the technician that what you are reporting may simply be normal for the car

Before anything is measured, MG's diagnostic strategy has the technician establish what normal operation of the system looks like, then compare your car against other examples of the same model in normal working order. The manual states plainly that the condition you describe may be a normal condition, and instructs the technician to explain the check results and how the system works back to you. Later, in the vibration section, MG goes further: if the symptom has been reproduced and the car matches known-good cars of the same model, year and configuration, the technician is to treat it as a potential operating characteristic of the vehicle and check the service bulletins to see whether MG has since decided otherwise. This is the documented route by which a real, repeatable complaint ends up written up as no fault found. It also tells you what actually shifts that outcome: not arguing, but a service bulletin, or a comparison against another MG4 that genuinely behaves differently.

MG's own answer to many intermittent electrical faults is cleaning and greasing a connector, not fitting a new part

There is a long passage on why electrical gremlins come and go, and almost none of it points at expensive parts. MG describes fretting: vibration and temperature swings cause movements of a fraction of a hair's width between the two halves of a connector, oxide debris builds up, and resistance rises until the circuit misbehaves. The documented remedy is to unplug the suspect connector, apply insulating grease to both sides of the terminals, reconnect and wipe off the excess. Alongside that it lists broken wires inside intact insulation, terminals crimped onto insulation rather than wire, moisture entering through pierced insulation and corroding a conductor invisibly, and deformed female terminals from repeated unplugging. It also instructs the technician to test the contact of the terminals before replacing a suspect component. If you are quoted a new module for a fault that comes and goes, this is manufacturer documentation that a connector should be eliminated first.

The MG4's air conditioning runs on R134a, and an overfilled system can itself cause a noise or vibration

The air conditioning precautions state the refrigerant as HFC-134a, R134a - not the R1234yf that many newer cars use, so a workshop that assumes otherwise is about to get it wrong. More usefully for anyone chasing a noise, MG lists incorrect refrigerant level or excessive refrigerant as a cause of noise or vibration in the air conditioning system, in the same breath as the wrong fluid type in any accessory system. So a hum, buzz or vibration that started after a cheap regas is a legitimate thing to point back at the regas. The section also notes that refrigerant lines touching a metal panel will transmit noise into the cabin and must be isolated, which is another quiet source that has nothing to do with the compressor being faulty.
